vend
English
[edit]Etymology 1
[edit]17th century, likely a backformation from earlier vendible, vendee, vendor inspired by the underlying French vendre, from Old French vendre, from Latin vendere, from vēnum dāre (“to give (something for) sale”).
Pronunciation
[edit]Verb
[edit]vend (third-person singular simple present vends, present participle vending, simple past and past participle vended)
- Synonym of sell, (now especially) to sell through a vending machine.
- 1913, Norman Lindsay, A Curate in Bohemia, Sydney: N.S.W. Bookstall Co., published 1932, page 151:
- As there was a small establishment that vended tea and toast just across the road, it was reasonable that Partridge should officiate therein as Limpet's host, and so easily adjusted to necessity are the economics of a simple life, that two pots of tea, two plates of toast, tobacco, and one subject of conversation, kept them occupied contentedly till ten o'clock.
- 1992 September 9, Trish Hall, “Vending Machines, the Next Generation in Dining”, in The New York Times[2], →ISSN, archived from the original on 1 October 2025:
- Vending has been slow to change partly because the business for years could depend on what it called the four C's: cold drinks, candy, confections and cigarettes.
- 2020 October 6, Saritha Rai, “Amazon Launches Month-Long Sale in Battle for Indian Wallets”, in Bloomberg.com[3], archived from the original on 4 November 2020:
- Amazon said over 20,000 small stores have signed on to its Local Shops program over five months to vend basics like household essentials and fresh flowers.
- (programming, transitive, uncommon) To provide or export functionality, especially from an API.

Noun
[edit]vend (plural vends)
- The letter Ꝩ/ꝩ, used in Old Norse, related to the rune wynn (ᚹ, whence also Latin-script Ƿ/ƿ) but with the bowl open at the top, like a y.
- 1874, Richard Cleasby, Gudbrand Vigfusson, An Icelandic-English Dictionary, page 707:
- [...] a gramm. term, implying the use of the old letter 'vend' in spelling v-rungu, v-rangr, v-reiðr, see introduction to letter R; ...
- 2005, Diana L. Paxson, Taking Up The Runes: A Complete Guide To Using Runes In Spells, Rituals, Divination, And Magic, Weiser Books, →ISBN, page 88:
- In Old English, the meaning of wynn is the same. In Old Norse, the etymological equivalents of words beginning with w are spelled with a v, the letter named “vend” in the Icelandic alphabet.
