About GUMI

GUMI is the mascot of a Japanese vocal synthesizer. As of 2025, GUMI has voicebanks across two major software: VOCALOID and Synthesizer V Studio. Each voicebank features phonemes provided by 中島 愛 (Nakajima Megumi), a Filipino-Japanese singer and voice actress. GUMI’s name comes from Megumi’s childhood nickname, Gumi. Her software name, Megpoid, is an abbreviation of “Megumi-like VOCALOID.”

GUMI’s voice was initially developed by Internet Co., Ltd. and released for Crypton Future Media’s VOCALOID2 engine in June 2009. Her 株式会社アニモ (Amino Limited) text-to-speech voice database, Megpoid Talk, was released in January 2014. In October 2022, she recieved an AI voicebank for VOCALOID6 with additional language support, followed by the release of her Synthesizer V AI bank in December 2023.

Japanese illustrator and mangaka ゆうきまさみ (Yuuki Masami) designed GUMI in 2009. Her outfit carries a striking resemblance to that of Macross Frontier character Ranka Lee, one of Nakajima Megumi’s first voice acting roles. In many of GUMI’s designs, her belt buckle is modeled after the Yamaha TENORI-ON, an electronic musical instrument developed by VOCALOID’s parent company.
