Similar Strength

When using "Similar Strength" settings for things like evolutions, Trainer Pokemon and Wild Pokemon, replacements are picked in the following way:

  1. Start with the initial viable pool of Pokemon. What this pool includes is dependent on the situation; for example, if randomizing evolutions with the "Same Typing" setting, it would be every Pokemon with the same EXP Curve as the base Pokemon (always applies when randomizing evolutions), sharing at least one type with the base Pokemon (applies when using the "Same Typing" setting). As such, the pool can be quite limited to begin with, depending on settings.
  2. From the pool, add every Pokemon that is within a 10% BST range from the original Pokemon to the "potential replacements" pool.
  3. If less than three candidates have been found, expand the range by 5 percentage points and add every Pokemon within the new range to the "potential replacements" pool. Repeat this step until one of the following is true: at least three potential replacements have been found, or the range has been expanded at least three times and at least one potential replacement has been found.
  4. Pick a replacement at random from the "potential replacements" pool.

The end result of this is that replacements typically will be within a 10% BST range of the original Pokemon, but it may vary if the initial pool is too limited.

In addition to the above process, a few other things are also taken into consideration:

  • When randomizing evolutions, duplicate evolutions (i.e. having more than one Pokemon evolve into the same Pokemon) are attempted to be avoided, by placing them in a separate "emergency replacements" pool. If no potential replacement is found after the range has been expanded twice, evolutions can be picked from the "emergency replacements" pool, allowing for duplicate evolutions.
  • When randomizing Trainer Pokemon with the "Even Distribution" setting, Pokemon that have been chosen fewer times than average are attempted to be picked from the "potential replacements" pool.
  • When randomizing Static Pokemon with the "Limit Main-Game Legendaries" setting, the initial BST range for the affected Pokemon is 20% instead of 10% and only expands downwards.

Following is an example to illustrate the process:

We are picking a replacement evolution for Abra in a Generation 5 game. Abra's original evolution, Kadabra, has 400 BST. We are using the setting that standardizes EXP curves, and the "Same Typing" setting for evolutions.

We start by looking for Psychic-type Pokemon in the 360-440 BST range. This yields the following Pokemon:

Lunatone (440)
Solrock (440)
Chimecho (425)
Swoobat (425)
Metang (420)
Medicham (410)
Wobbuffet (405)
Gothorita (390)
Duosion (370)

However, let's say that all of these except for Gothorita and Duosion already have been picked as evolutions for other Pokemon. As such, Gothorita and Duosion are added to the "potential replacements" pool and the rest are added to the "emergency replacements" pool.

Since we don't have three potential replacements yet, the range is expanded by 5 percentage points and is now 340-460. This yields the following Pokemon:

Mr. Mime (460)
Jynx (455)
Girafarig (455)

Let's say none of these have been picked as evolutions yet. They are all added to the "potential replacements" pool. At this point, we have found at least three potential replacements, so we will stop looking. Our final pool that we will pick from is:

Mr. Mime (460)
Jynx (455)
Girafarig (455)
Gothorita (390)
Duosion (370)

The replacement is chosen at random from this pool; it ends up being Jynx. Congratulations! It's a high roll.
