Andrea Meza Murillo: COP17 Must Turn Commitments into Action
For too long, the world has looked at open grazing land and seen empty space with no value, says Andrea Meza Murillo, Deputy Executive Secretary of the UN Convention to Combat Desertification. Correcting that — making the case that rangelands are "no wasteland" but a foundation of food security and livelihoods for millions — is one of the outcomes she most wants from COP17 in Ulaanbaatar. In an interview with MONTSAME on the fifth day of the conference, Meza Murillo argued that this must be the "COP of implementation," where nations move from pledges on rangelands, soil health, and drought toward the policies, incentives, and investments that turn them into results on the ground.
