Roots and Wings（根と翼）-3/7

My new assignment made me realise how different the working culture was there.

‘What on earth is going on here? I am the only one left in the office after working hours. How is this place managed?’

‘What surprised you! This was perfectly normal in this garden!.’

Finally, my local colleague said to me, ‘Are you still planning to stay here? For your own sake, I suggest you follow our way of working. Otherwise, people may start wondering why you stay so late.’

Once I realised this, I began to adapt to the new environment. I reviewed all of my old ways, and abandoned those I found unnecessary. I also modified some of my habits to fit this new approach. As a result, I was able to leave the office on time most days, if not all. My life was transformed, and I now had enough time to spend with my family.

I murmured, ‘ I was right to keep pursuing this opportunity.’

At the same time, a thought crossed my mind that this efficient working style might stem from the garden’s environment. The garden was made up of low-growing trees and plants spread across flatlands. With few obstacles blocking the view, everything was open and visible. Perhaps this openness had shaped the way the trees worked: simple, efficient, and free from unnecessary complexity.

Several months passed peacefully in Batavi. I was enjoying a balance I had never experienced before. Then, one morning, a message arrived from Mittelgebirge.

Little did I know that my former teammate was facing a completely different reality in his new frontier.

新しい配属先で働き始めて、私はこの庭の労働文化がどれほど異なっているかを思い知らされた。

「一体全体、ここでは何が起きているんだ？ 終業時間を過ぎてもオフィスに残っているのは、私一人だけじゃないか。この場所はどういう管理をされているんだ？」

「何に驚いているんだい？ この庭じゃ、これが至極当たり前の光景さ！」

やがて、現地の同僚が私にこう告げた。「まだここに留まるつもりかい？ 自分自身のためにも、私たちの働き方に従うことをお勧めするよ。さもないと、なぜ君がそんな夜遅くまで残っているのか、みんな不思議がり始めてしまうからね」

その事実を悟ってから、私は新たな環境へと適応し始めた。これまでの古いやり方をすべて見直し、不要だと感じたものは容赦なく捨て去った。そして、この新しいアプローチに合うよう、自らの習慣もいくつか改めたのだ。その結果、全日とはいかないまでも、ほとんどの日に定時でオフィスを後にすることができるようになった。私の生活は劇的に変わり、家族と共に過ごす十分な時間を持てるようになったのである。

私は静かに呟いた。「この機会を追い求め続けて、本当に正解だったな」

それと同時に、この効率的な働き方は、この庭の環境そのものから生まれているのではないか、という思いが頭をよぎった。その庭は、平坦な土地に低木や背の低い植物が広がって作られていた。視界を遮る障害物がほとんどないため、あらゆるものが開かれており、見渡すことができた。おそらく、この開かれた環境こそが、木々の働き方をシンプルで効率的、かつ余計な複雑さのないものへと形作っていたのだろう。

バタヴィでの数ヶ月が、穏やかに過ぎ去っていった。私はこれまで経験したことのない調和とバランスを心から享受していた。だが、ある朝のこと、ミッテルゲビルゲから一通の便りが届いたのだ。

かつての同僚が、その新たな開拓地で全く異なる現実に直面しているとは、この時の私は知る由もなかった。
