Roots and Wings（根と翼）-2/7

One day, while our team was juggling tasks,  one of my colleagues and I were called to the office of the head of our section. This came as a surprise, because neither of us had ever been called in before or expected to be. We entered the office, feeling a bit tense and wondering what he was going to say.

What awaited us was a new chapter in our lives. The superior began to talk with us:

‘Thank you for your hard work every day. Since you have been engaged in your current duties for some time, it is now time for you to broaden your experience.’

With these words, he offered my teammate a relocation to Mittelgebirge, a garden filled with wooded uplands, where he would continue handling product development and other responsibilities similar to those he had carried out in our original garden, where market preferences were completely different from those of our original garden. 

My new assignment also included relocating to Batavi, a garden full of low-lying lands, low trees and plants. There, my responsibility was to market our products to the ten other nearby gardens. Although I accepted the new duty outwardly calm, I was inwardly thrilled with it, because it was a moment I had been looking forward to for quite some time.

I said to myself, ‘ I did it! I have finally achieved my goal!’

Soon after the meeting with the head, we moved on to our respective new frontiers. I soon realised that my new garden was completely different from my native one. The climate was dry and less humid, while the water was richer in minerals. Furthermore, soil nutrients were heavier. But it did not take me long to adapt to the new environment. The new environment suited me perfectly.

At that moment, neither of us knew that our two journeys would lead to completely different destinations.

ある日のこと、私たちがいつものように山積みの仕事に追われていると、私と同僚の一人が「部門の長」の部屋へと呼び出された。これまで一度も呼び出されたことがなく、思いがけない知らせだったため、私たちは酷く驚いた。一体何を告げられるのだろうと、少なからず緊張を胸に宿しながら、私たちは長の部屋へと足を踏み入れるのだった。

そこで私たちを待っていたのは、自らの命の新たな章の始まりであった。長は静かに語り始めた。

「日々、誠勤に励んでくれたことに感謝する。お前たちが今の責務に就いてから久しい。そろそろ、その根を広げ、より広い世界で経験を積む時が来たのだ」

その言葉とともに、長は仲間の一人に『ミッテルゲビルゲ』への赴任を命じた。そこは木々が生い茂る高地に広がる庭で、彼はそこで、私たちの故郷の庭とはまったく市場の好みが異なる地でありながら、これまで同様に道具の開発やその他の責務を担うこととなった。

そして私に与えられた新たな使命は、低地と背の低い草木に満ちた庭、『バタヴィ』へと移り住むことだった。そこでの私の役目は、近隣にある十もの庭々に対して、私たちの製品を広めること。表向きは冷静さを装ってその指示を受け入れたものの、私の胸の奥は歓喜で震えていた。それこそが、私が長い間待ち望んでいた瞬間に他ならなかったからだ。

「やったぞ！ ついに夢を掴み取ったんだ！」と、私は心の中で叫んだ。

長との面談を終えてまもなく、私たちはそれぞれの新たな新天地へと旅立っていった。そして新しい庭に到着するとすぐ、そこが生まれ育った故郷の庭とはまるで異なっていることに気づかされた。気候は乾燥して湿気が少なく、水には豊かな鉱物が含まれ、土壌の養分もどこか重みがあった。しかし、私がその新たな環境に適応するのに、そう時間はかからなかった。その地は、驚くほど私という木に合っていたのだ。

だがその時の私たちは、知る由もなかった。 私たちが歩み出した二つの旅路が、やがてまったく異なる結末へと繋がっていることを。
