Persistent Effort and Patience(粘り強い取組みと我慢)-2

(in the Style of the Guardian by ChatGPT)

Learning patience is a slow business. So, it turns out, is overcoming clumsiness.

I have recently been attempting both through an unlikely vehicle: a Lego model of the Eiffel Tower. With more than 3,000 pieces and a structure that seems determined to collapse at the slightest provocation, it has become less a hobby than a practical course in self-discipline.

The project began shortly after my wife succeeded in repairing a Lego Capsule Machine that I had failed to fix myself. Buoyed by her success, she suggested that we tackle the Eiffel Tower next. At first, the experience was enjoyable. There is something deeply satisfying about watching a famous landmark emerge piece by piece. Yet the novelty soon gave way to frustration. The tower's intricate framework demands constant concentration, and a single mistake can undo several minutes of careful work.

My contribution, however, should not be overstated. Each evening, my wife patiently prepares the pieces required for the next stage and explains exactly where they should go. In effect, she serves as architect, engineer and site manager, while I perform the role of labourer. Even then, I regularly manage to place pieces incorrectly and find myself becoming irritated at my own inability to follow straightforward instructions.

Whenever my patience begins to evaporate, she calmly reminds me to keep going. Indeed, abandoning the project is not really an option. She has made it abundantly clear that the tower will be completed, whether I like it or not.

While wrestling with this miniature construction project, I happened to read that the main tower of Barcelona's Sagrada Família had finally been completed. The news immediately brought back memories of visiting the extraordinary basilica years ago. Even then, I was struck by the strange combination of grandeur and incompleteness that defined it.

Construction of the church began in the 19th century and continued through wars, political upheaval, financial uncertainty and repeated revisions. Generations of architects, artisans and builders devoted themselves to a project they knew they would never see finished. Yet they persisted.

The comparison is, of course, absurd. My Lego tower is hardly a masterpiece of world architecture. Still, there is something reassuring about being reminded that worthwhile things often take far longer than expected. If even highly skilled professionals required well over a century to complete one of the world's most ambitious buildings, perhaps I need not worry about spending six months assembling a Lego set.

In an age obsessed with speed, efficiency and instant results, there is a certain comfort in slow progress. Patience is not merely the ability to wait; it is the ability to continue despite frustration, uncertainty and the temptation to give up.

For that reason, I am beginning to suspect that the real value of this project lies not in the completed tower itself, but in the lessons learned while building it.

Still, I cannot help appreciating the coincidence. Just as Barcelona celebrated the completion of one of the world's most famous construction projects, I found myself struggling to complete one of the smallest.
