Everton 0-3 Brighton: Final | Humiliation at Goodison Park

Fulltime Thoughts - Everton looked the same as last season, which you would think was a positive but instead it turned on Dyche as Brighton’s pace caught his side flat-footed.

90+11’ - There it is finally, phew. Brighton destroy Everton 3-0, but the game seemed to have hinged on a penalty to the Blues that was overturned when it was still 1-0.

90+10’ - Just blow the damn whistle.

90+6’ - Still not over, urgh. Brighton just passing it around.

90’ - Nine minutes to be added on. No idea why.
Some guy called Ayari has come on and scores with his first touch. Holgate has no idea where he is and he touches it home with Pickford in no man’s land, 4-0 now.
VAR saves Holgate’s blushes though, marginally offside for the Brighton man.

87’ - Another counter, another goal. This time it’s Adingra tucking his finish beyond Pickford. Myko left his man free as he cut in and jumped on Welbeck’s incisive pass, 3-0. The humiliation continues.

80’ - Another awful cross-field pass and now Mitoma can attack, his ball into the box for Pedro is cut out well by Pickford.
Cross into the box, cleared for a corner. The visitors look more likely to score a third than Everton getting anything here. Milner corner cleared, ball back into the box is also hoofed clear by Iro.

78’ - Tarky late on Joao Pedro, yellow card. The Everton captain didn’t even bother to face Hooper on that one.

76’ - Calvert-Lewin comes off, Beto comes on for him. Ndiaye has had one touch in the twelve minutes he’s been on, by the way.

73’ - Myko out of position and then Keane decides to step up when he’s nowhere near the ball, and now Brighton have acres of space and yellow shirts on the right, but Tarky comes over to cut it out for a corner.

71’ - McNeil is covering at right-back for Everton after Young’s red card.

66’ - Oh dear. Long ball, and Young miscontrols it and Mitoma pounces and proceeds to run away, and the veteran fullback yanks him back and he is sent off. Pretty obvious.
Milner steps up to take the freekick, takes it sideways to Mitoma whose shot is saved by Pickford, corner. Taken short, Pickford collects.

62’ - The Blues’ first change of the afternoon will be Iliman Ndiaye making his debut for the Blues, with Doucoure coming off.
Iro now with a mistake and it takes Tarky and Pickford to combine to foil Mitoma, corner. The corner is cleared way upfield, but the Blues have no players out there.

58’ - Everton sliced wide open again, lucky though that Adingra’s cross is too close to Pickford this time.

56’ - Gueye misplaced pass, Brighton push forward through Welbeck, 3-on-2, and he does it himself, beating Pickford on the goalie’s right, 2-0 to the visitors. Good night?

55’ - McNeil has been completely invisible today. The Blues better be making some changes at the hour mark, but there’s no subs warming up on the Everton bench.

52’ - Harrison collects another lovely diagonal deep ball, cross into the box and Doucs’ header goes off Veltman’s arm, but again no penalty. The defender looks to have clashed heads possibly with Doucs, because he’s been down for some time now. He’s going to go off, with Baleba coming on. Nope, scratch that he’s staying on.

47’ - Brighton turn the ball over in their own box and Dunk cuts DCL down, penalty!! Hooper is going to go over to the VAR screen though, so this might be reviewed.
Hooper comes back and says no penalty, and Goodison is very unimpressed.

46’ - Second half underway, no changes from either side.

Halftime Thoughts - Everton did not take advantage of the chances they created from the high press early on, and once Brighton settled in they had the time to start carving the Blues open.

45+5’ - Whistle goes. The Blues have work to do to level this, but there remains the danger of a quick Brighton team getting behind them. What changes should Dyche make?

45’ - Play goes on as Minteh is getting a concussion check. Now Mitoma blocks a Young cross when the Blues had enough shirts in the box.
Four minutes to be added on. Minteh will not be returning, and it’ll be Adingra coming on for him.

42’ - Blues are getting plenty of the ball in the middle but cannot get a decisive pass into the final third. Meanwhile Young sends Mitoma into the stands with a sliding tackle that the fans quite enjoyed.
Meanwhile now Minteh clatters into Myko in the Brighton box and the crowd wants a penalty! The winger has come off worse there, his face bouncing off Myko’s elbow. Hooper insists the Brighton player won the ball.

39’ - Harrison cross parried away by Steele, ball comes back to Harrison who tees up Young. This is a deep cross and Steele fluffs it but Brighton can clear before a blue shirt can get to it.

37’ - Iro steals the ball in the middle, fires off a shot that is blocked and as he chases the rebound barges a Brighton player over who goes down like a wet noodle. Strong old-fashioned challenge, but Simon Hooper disagrees.

31’ - Milner slides in and leaves his boot in on Myko, booked amongst howls of derision from the fans for the former Liverpool player.

29’ - Doucs break on the left, comes to Iro whose cross is partly cleared, ball falls to Gana who fires off a volley, just over.
Doucs stray offside on the left as he looks to fire off a shot, blocked.

28’ - Everton are in shambles behind again as Welbeck dances through but luckily scoops the ball over, phew.

25’ - Dangerous cross across the face of the Everton goal but the Blues can clear.
Minteh again gains a yard of pace over Myko and swings in a low cross for Mitoma to hammer home, Brighton lead 1-0.
Sigh, if only we could have sealed that Minteh deal, that kid is incredible, this summer’s Kudus.

23’ - DCL rises perfectly to head on a long ball for Doucs to run onto, but the midfielder is in such a hurry to cross the ball there’s no players to challenge Steele as he goes up for it.

20’ - Everton are getting plenty of joy intercepting Brighton passes in the middle third. Now Iro cuts one out and runs at goal himself, and tries to curl it into the far post, doesn’t get enough curl on that, oooh.

17’ - Minteh showing off his danger again slashing through the middle of the Blues, Mitoma shot is blocked by Tarky who catches some studs in his shin for his trouble.
The ref is keeping his whistle quiet as about six sliding tackles go flying in in a tiny area at the edge of Everton’s box.

15’ - Keane caught upfront after a misplaced pass and Minteh just runs away, but captain of the day Tarky comes across and puts a halt to all that.
Brighton corner is met by Dunk, but sails way over.

13’ - Wieffer clatters into Iro and the Blues have a freekick in a dangerous area. McNeil’s ball to Tarky, but he he cannot keep his header down and it nestles on the roof of the net.

12’ - Gana backheel to Harrison in the box, and he cannot get his foot to wrap around the ball and it goes wide. The Blues are pressing the Seagulls high and it’s working.

10’ - The clock turns to nine minutes and a huge cheer and rendition of ‘Super Kevin Campbell’ rings out as the fans remember the legendary striker who sadly passed away earlier this summer.

8’ - Oh my goodness two huge misses!! Doucoure and McNeil broke behind the Brighton high line and somehow McNeil hits the post, gets the rebound and it goes across the goal and both DCL and Doucs cannot tap in. Oh ok, Doucs was offside anyway.
Wow Tarkowski error and Joao Pedro cannot take advantage, and that is what started off that counter.

4’ - Harrison cuts in from the right and hammers a left-footed shot at goal, Steele parries it away and the Blues win a corner on the left.
Swung into the box, Keane heads the ball back across goal and Harrison tucks it in! Everton lead!! Not.. Harrison had strayed offside, argh.

2’ - Iroegbunam is on the right side of midfield, Gana on the left. And the new boy slides in right away to stop Mitoma’s progress after the winger beats Young.

1’ - Underway!

Players in the tunnel, ‘Spirit of the Blues’ belting out on the tannoy, Goodison Park is festooned with flags and banners. Now there’s the iconic air horn, and heralds the dulcet notes of ‘Z Cars’, oh goodness we’re going to miss this stadium aren’t we 😢

Everton - As expected, Sean Dyche has gone with the tried and tested with Abdoulaye Doucoure and Michael Keane starting. There is a full Everton debut for Tim Iroegbunam though.

Brighton -

Everton will be looking to start their final season in the friendly confines of Goodison Park on a positive note, but they are going to come up against a Brighton & Hove Albion smarting after a difficult European campaign season. The Seagulls have since changed managers with Roberto De Zerbi shown the door and 31-year-old Fabian Hürzeler taking over, the youngest ever permanent manager in the Premier League.

Both teams have made a raft of changes in their squads since last year, but somehow the Blues will still go into this game looking more like they ended last season than anything else. Still, considering that the Toffees have one win and two draws against the Seagulls since Sean Dyche took over does brook some hope.
