Simon Long has announced the availability of a new release of Raspbian, a Debian-based distribution for the Raspberry Pi single-board computers. One major change in this release is the addition of the VLC media player: "When I first joined Raspberry Pi, back in the dim and distant past (in reality 2014, but it does seem a long time ago now) and I started looking at Raspbian, I made a list of the additional features and applications that I thought it needed to be a 'complete' modern desktop operating system. Over the years, we've managed to tick off most of the items on that list, but one glaring omission has been nagging at me all this time: a decent media player. Windows has Windows Media Player, MacOS has QuickTime Player and iTunes, but we've had a big hole where something similar ought to be for Raspbian. It has been a common request on the forums and while we've had bits and pieces that do some of the job, we really wanted a nice GUI-based media player." | About Raspberry Pi OS
|
| Raspberry Pi OS (formerly Raspbian) is a free operating system based on Debian GNU/Linux and optimised for the Raspberry Pi hardware (the armhf processor architecture). Raspberry Pi OS comes with over 35,000 packages, or pre-compiled software bundled in a nice format for easy installation on a Raspberry Pi. The initial build was completed in June of 2012, but the distribution continues to be active developed with an emphasis on improving the stability and performance of as many Debian packages as possible. Although Debian produces a distribution for the arm architecture, it is compatible only with versions later than the one used on the Raspberry Pi (ARMv7-A CPUs and higher vs the Raspberry Pi's ARMv6 CPU).

Simon Long has announced the release of a new security update of Raspberry Pi OS, a Debian-based Linux distribution designed for the popular Raspberry Pi single-board computers. The new version, besides bringing the usual range of bug fixes and improvements, also disables the passwordless sudo: "Today we are releasing version 6.2 of Raspberry Pi OS, the second update to the 'Trixie' version we released last year. This update is mostly a round-up of all the small changes and bug fixes we have made over the past few months, but there is one significant change that we’d like to flag up - passwordless sudo is now disabled by default. Given the ever-increasing threat of cybercrime, we continually review the security of Raspberry Pi OS to ensure it is sufficiently robust to withstand potential attacks. This is always a tricky balance, as anything that makes the operating system more secure will invariably inconvenience legitimate users to some extent, so we try to keep such changes to a minimum. Distribution Release: Raspberry Pi OS 2025-10-01 |

Simon Long has announced the release of a major new update of Raspberry Pi OS, a Debian-based Linux distribution designed specifically for the Raspberry Pi range of single-board computers. This is the project's first release based on Debian 13; it introduces a new theme and a new control centre applications: "We've made some changes of our own in the 'Trixie' release. The most obvious is that we have updated the theme for the desktop - we have a completely new set of icons, a new font, new desktop backgrounds, and some other small tweaks to refresh the appearance of the system. This should be apparent as soon as you launch it. Another change we have made to tidy things up is to replace all the old preferences applications - Raspberry Pi Configuration, Appearance Settings, Mouse and Keyboard Settings, Screen Configuration, Printer - with a single new Control Centre application.
