Kali Linux is a Debian-based distribution with a collection of security and forensics tools. The project's latest snapshot is Kali Linux 2023.4 which features a number of usability improvements, many of them courtesy of GNOME 45: "With GNOME 45 hot off the press, Kali Linux is now supporting it! And is looking pretty in the process! For people who opt to use GNOME as their desktop environment, GNOME 45 is now here! If you do not read their changelog, below is a quick summary mixed with some of our tweaks: Full-height sidebars in many updated apps; highly improved speed of search in nautilus file manager; unfortunately the update for Nautilus was not ready for this release, but it will arrive as a later update soon; improved settings app (gnome-control-center); updated color-schemes for gnome-text-editor; updated themes for shell, libadwaita, gtk-3 and gtk-4; updated gnome-shell extensions; shell updates, including a new workspace indicator, replacing the previous Activities button; it is also possible to scroll your mouse wheel while hovering over the indicator to switch between workspaces." The Kali Linux project has released a new snapshot of the security- and forensics-focused distribution. The project's 2026.2 release includes several upgrades: "It's the final week of Q2, and Kali Linux 2026.2 is here - right on schedule. We have been heads down since our last release, and we are ready to share what we have been working on. This release is a mix of desktop refreshes, infrastructure improvements, and quality-of-life changes that we think you will appreciate. The summary of the changelog since the 2026.1 release from March is: desktop environments - bump to GNOME 50 and KDE Plasma 6.6; helper scripts consistency - consistency to our little launches at starting services; APT format - goodbye sources.list, hello sources.list.d/kali.source; VM boot optimisation - smaller initrd + faster boot times = happy virtual machine users; reboot warning - heads-up, polkit and xrdp upgrades require a system reboot; Kali kernel incoming - staying with 6.19 for now, how to get 7.0 early; build scripts incoming - heads-up with some changes on the way; new tools - as always, various new shiny packages have been added (9)." The Kali Linux team has published a new version of its distribution with the launch of Kali Linux 2026.1. The new version includes a classic theme which makes the desktop resemble the project's first release, which happened 20 years ago. There are also several new tools included in the 2026.1 release. "New year, new release - Kali 2026.1 is here. There is everything from a fresh coat of paint to a nod to our roots, with normal ongoing improvements. Building on from December's 2025.4, the summary of the changelog: 2026 theme refresh - our yearly theme refresh; BackTrack mode for Kali-Undercover - a new mode celebrating BackTrack's 20th anniversary; Kali’s 13th birthday event - a little community event; new tools - 8 new programs. 2026 marks the 20th anniversary of BackTrack Linux, the predecessor to Kali. To celebrate this milestone, we wanted to bring back some nostalgia for longtime users of this legendary cybersecurity distribution by adding a 'BackTrack mode' to kali-undercover. This mode transforms the desktop to recreate the look and feel of BackTrack 5, with the same wallpaper, colors and window themes. Distribution Release: Kali Linux 2025.4 |

The Kali Linux team have announced a new version of their Debian-based distribution. The security and forensics platform includes new updates to the Plasma and GNOME desktops along with better Wayland support for instances running inside virtual machines. "Now that GNOME has moved to only supporting Wayland, and KDE in Kali has already used it by default for a few years (since Kali Linux 2023.1), we wanted to ensure that the transition and experience were seamless. The only thing that we felt was missing was support for VM guest tools, like clipboard sharing and window scaling, but things have been progressing, and now all the major VM software fully supports Wayland. We have tested Kali installations with Wayland as the guest OS in VirtualBox, VMware, and QEMU, configured the missing parts, and we are happy to announce that all of the VM guest additions that you expected in X11 before are now working in Wayland without trouble." Distribution Release: Kali Linux 2025.3 |

The Kali Linux team have announced the launch of Kali Linux 2025.3. The distribution, which is based on Debian's Testing branch, refreshes the Nexmon wireless firmware and drops support for armel CPUs. "Nexmon is a “patched” firmware, for certain wireless chips, to extend their functionally to allow: Monitor mode - able to sniff packets; Injection mode - frame injection allows for custom raw packets to be sent, outside of the “standard” stack ordering. Both are really useful when it comes to information security! For the record, it is possible to-do both of the features above without Nexmon, as it depends on the device's chipset and drivers. Now, Nexmon supported wireless chips are Broadcom & Cypress, which are in a various devices, including the Raspberry Pi's in-built Wi-Fi! In Kali 2025.1, we changed how we package our Raspberry Pi kernel, as well as bump to a new major version. Now Nexmon support is back as well as supporting Raspberry Pi 5!
