April 27, 2011

A year ago this morning I was awakened early by Tony telling us we needed to go take cover because a tornado was headed our way. To be honest, I didn't want to get up, but I did, and we went to our shelter. When we came out, part of our roof was gone and our neighbor was trapped in her house with multiple trees down on it. Our power was out, so that was the end of any TV coverage of the storms for us. Little did we know at that time that this was just the beginning.

I checked radar on my phone and it looked like we had some time before the next round of storms, so I got ready and headed over to the office. There were a lot of trees down along the way, but no major damage. When I arrived at my parent's house and the office they had lost some Bradford Pear trees, and the chairs had blown through the railing on their back deck and were scattered on the lawn. They also had no power, so I put the chairs in the storage area under the house and headed back home.

I have wished many times in the past year that I could go back to that moment. If I had known what was going to happen in just a few hours there are so many things I could have saved for my parents from the house or from the office.

The rest of the day is somewhat of a blur. Because of the power outage and phone towers down it was difficult to get signal on my phone, so we decided to drive toward Fort Payne in hopes of better signal and also to purchase a weather radio. I had always used my phone for weather alerts but because it was not working so well I wanted to purchase the radio. (Pic: Trying to get signal on cell phone at the house)

We picked up some weather coverage on the radio as we were driving and I tried to keep an eye on the radar on my phone. I remember seeing several large red storms moving across the area. We drove back up 117 toward Ider and when we got to the 4-way we could see off in the distance in front of us a huge storm.

We stopped and sat there for a few minutes then decided to drive back down 117 to get further away from it, since we didn't know for sure what direction it was headed. It looked like it could have been going straight toward our house. We waited till the storm had moved past and drove home. We were thankful to see our house still standing.

Tony decided to take a shower with what little hot water was left and while he was in the bathroom my phone beeped that I had a voicemail message. I listened to it and didn't really comprehend it at first. It was from my parent's neighbor and she said that the house was gone but they were all ok. I kept thinking she was telling me about her house. When Tony came out we decided to drive over there and check on them.

Later we found out that storm we watched from the 4-way had crossed about 4-5 miles down the road from our house. It was an F5 tornado and had already destroyed the homes of 3 of our church families, had killed over a dozen people, and it was the same storm that eventually destroyed my parents home.

Even as we got closer to their area, we did not see extensive damage. The storm had come from the west and hit their home and we driving in from the east, so the first major damage that we saw was right in their neighborhood.

The first thing I noticed as turned on their road was that we could see the mountain in the distance. There used to be a tree line there, so the mountain was not visible. I think shock started to set in as we got closer to what was left of the house.

Tony called my dad to tell him what had happened. My first instinct was that I needed to start picking up everything. I remember I wanted to go in the office to check on things but we had no way of knowing if the structure was sound or if it was going to collapse. There was also another storm blowing in and we needed to leave and go somewhere safe.

As we pulled out of their neighborhood we made a last minute decision to go stay with Krysten in Chattanooga instead of heading back to our house. Krysten still had power (and hot water) and that was our main reason for going there. Had we gone back to our house, we would have been driving back into another F4 tornado that was going through town around that time.

As I sat in the recliner and tried to rest that night (sleep was nearly impossible) I could not help but be thankful. Thankful that God had protected us throughout that day, thankful that even though my parents had lost so much, there were not at home that day and their lives had been spared, thankful that Krysten and her family were safe and had power. In the coming days we would learn much about ourselves and our community, and there would be sorrow for the ones who lost that day, but through it all I can still stay "The LORD is good, a strong hold in the day of trouble; and he knoweth them that trust in him." Day 4 and counting

Well, it was a very busy weekend and I didn't have time to update on the diet... I mean lifestyle change. :) I guess the main highlight to tell you about the past few days is that I have NOT been hungry. If anything, quite the opposite. I sometimes have to force myself to eat what I am supposed to eat.

Don't get me wrong - I have still enjoyed having my "extras" like the sugar free Popsicle I just finished - but I had that more because I wanted something sweet, not because I was hungry. The majority of the meals we having been eating have been the LP/FC combination (Lean Protein / Fibrous Carb). I think that is the reason for my fullness... I have a good amount of protein and fiber with each meal and between that and all the water I'm drinking, there's not much left to be hungry.

Speaking of water. I've done better drinking my water earlier in the day after that last post. Tonight we had blackened tilapia and asparagus for dinner. I have not used blackening seasoning before and I think I went a little heavy on it. Hubby absolutely loved it, but I felt like my mouth was on fire from the first bite! The good part of that was that I drank a bunch of water! haha

Stuck DVD Review

I received a copy of Jeannie Allen's DVD Bible study "Stuck" to review for Thomas Nelson through BookSneeze. I enjoyed watching the DVD and reading the study book. The material covered is very relevant , especially for today's women.

We all get stuck. You know how it is. This study addresses several of those common areas that we get stuck in: broken, mad, discontent, scared, overwhelmed, and sad. I've experienced pretty much all of these at one time or another in my life. I liked how each session was down to earth and straight to the point but most importantly filled with scripture! I can't wait to use this with the ladies at my church!

Body 4 Believers

Today I started a lifestyle change in my eating. I desperately need to lose weight, but it needs to be in a way that works for me. Other "diets" have worked for a while, but nothing long term. This is a way of life and a change that we can do together as a family.

I will say up front that I am not an expert on this program. I am a "newbie" and I am just learning, but I thought it might help others down the road if I shared my journey from day one, so here I am.

I came home last night psyched from attending the first class, but quickly realized I didn't have much in the house that I could use to have breakfast in the morning (within an hour of waking up)! I did have peanut butter..... I decided to go right to Foodland when I got up this morning. I was surprised to see that they now carry the Double Fiber Wheat Bread (I had looked for it there a few weeks ago and they did not carry it). I got some bread, eggs, and fat free cheese slices. Not much, but a start.

I had two pieces of toast with peanut butter for breakfast. I will admit right now that breakfast is the hardest meal for me to eat. I do not like to eat anything until about noon - and I know that is a big part of my problem. With that said, I can handle peanut butter toast in the morning - so I am guessing that will probably be pretty regular for me for breakfast during the week. :)

Lunch was turkey sandwich with fat free mayo, spicy mustard and some dill pickles. Dinner was grilled pork chop with peppers, onions & mushrooms and broccoli. Snack was some peanut butter and celery sticks. Extras were dill pickles, radishes and sugar free jello.

I realize some of you reading this may have no idea what I mean by the extras and such. It's too much to explain in one post, so I will save that for another day. The only regret I have for today is that it is almost 9 pm and I am sitting here trying to finish my water - and I'm not to thrilled to be drinking this soon before bedtime!! argh! I spent a lot of time in the van today and I didn't get my water down earlier in the day - I will not do this again tomorrow!!!

I guess that's all for now. I will say that I have not been hungry today. I feel good and I'm glad day 1 is about over with! On to day 2.....

When God Whispers Your Name by Max Lucado

Max Lucado is a master storyteller. His ability to take a Bible story that we all know and transform it into a memorable story that helps us remember the biblical lesson is amazing.

This book could easily be read in one or two sittings, but I chose to spread it out a bit further. Each chapter is an epic reminder of how much God loves you! We all at times need to be reminded of that simple truth - and this book is a great way to do just that.

Thank You, God, for Blessing Me - Max Lucado

Just as Max Lucado's books for adults speak straight to the heart, this book does the same for preschoolers. A simple, straight-forward lesson on being thankful for what God has given you. My grand-daughter and I both enjoyed reading this book together many times. Hermie and friends are great characters that Max has used to teach truths to preschoolers.

One Call Away - Brenda Warner

I "accidentally" opened this book on my Kindle one night and by the time I stopped reading that evening I was nearly half way through the book! It caught my attention from the beginning and I couldn't put it down. I laughed and cried as Brenda shared the reality of her life with us. Being an avid football fan, I had always liked Kurt Warner both for his play on the field and his testimony off the field. I now have a whole new respect for him and his family after reading "the rest of the story." I highly recommend this book.
