Chelsea 6-0 Everton: Final | A Deserved Pasting

Fulltime Thoughts - Everton have been comprehensively and thoroughly beaten. They were awful from starting to finish, and deserved this pasting. To make things worse, they’ve seen their decent goal difference wiped out and now also have injuries to Branthwaite and Patterson to contend with. A thoroughly shit outing all around.

90+7’ - Beto takes another shot, deflected slightly but saved easily. And there’s the final whistle, mercifully, 6-0 the final score.

90+3’ - The ref has added seven minutes here, likely to give Chelsea a chance at getting another couple of goals. The Blues meanwhile have had their goal difference advantage over Forest wiped out completely with the two sides level now.

90’ - Youngster Gilchrist is on, and gets a goal too. Pickford cuts out a shot/cross, it falls to the Chelsea sub who smashes home. Meanwhile Patterson looks to have done his hamstring too, so the Blues are going to be down another player.

85’ - Chelsea happy to play keep-ball now to preserve the clean sheet. Everton.. well, nobody really cares.

78’ - Myko has been pushing forward and wins the second corner in a couple of minutes. Both cleared, of course.

67’ - Beto jumps on a loose ball in the box and from a narrow angle puts his foot through the ball. Must have had his eyes closed because he sails it over the target.

65’ - McNeil goes down in the box, no penalty, Chelsea break and Keane with a horrible tackle on Jackson to stop the counter. Rightfully booked.

63’ - The dust has settled and it’s Palmer to take it, even as Pickford is complaining about the spot, lol. Palmer sends Pickford the wrong way, 5-0 now, with his ninth penalty goal of the season.

59’ - Madueke and Gusto combine down the right, cross is parried away by Pickford and comes off Patterson and almost goes in as an own goal! The corner is cleared away, and then shot blocked for another corner.
Low corner, partly cleared and then another corner, the Blues still can’t clear and now Chelsea have a penalty. There were two challenges, on Palmer and Madueke, and to be honest not sure what the penalty is for because neither is a foul!
More drama here as four Chelsea players are fighting over who takes the penalty, with the blue shirts shoving and pushing each other?!

58’ - This is bad, bad, bad for Everton as Jarrad Branthwaite hobbles off. Everton’s best chance at getting a goal is now on the pitch as Michael Keane comes on for the young defender.

55’ - Palmer might have been offside there on the through ball from Mudryk, but Pickford saves very well with his feet.

53’ - Tarky hauls down Jackson and is rightly booked.

50’ - Gomes getting plenty of joy on the ball, dribbling and spreading the ball around. Now he gets a shot deflected for a corner. McNeil inswinger, Branthwaite unmarked and gets it into the side netting, inches away again.

46’ - I couldn’t think of a single positive from that shitstorm of a first half. Here come some changes though, with Jack Harrison, Andre Gomes and Nathan Patterson all on now. It’s Coleman, Onana and Garner who have gone off. Gomes and Doucs are in the middle now, Harrison ahead of them while Young stays out on the right.

Halftime Thoughts - Everton did not show up today, and have been duly spanked at a stadium where they have had a horrendous history.

45+4’ - Five minutes were added on. McNeil corner is again into the six-yard box, Onana rises highest but cannot direct the header on goal. There’s the halftime whistle.

45’ - Cucurella free down the sideline as Everton are waiting on an offside that won’t come, his cross is very well controlled by Jackson who pulls the ball down and tucks it tight into the post 4-0.

44’ - Another chance, this time McNeil finds Beto in the box, his shot is muffled by Gusto and rolls to the goalie.

41’ - Coleman nicks the ball off Mudryk and is pulled down, first booking for a Chelsea player. McNeil freekick, brilliantly put back across the box low by Tarky but no one can get a foot on it, corner for the Blues.
McNeil inswinger, another corner. Again McNeil and again Petrovic puts it over. Now Garner to take this one, lots of argy-bargy in the six-yard box, this one is long and cleared.

37’ - Young goes in the book now, tripping Gallagher.

36’ - Goal for Beto, and of course he’s well offside. Great cross from the right and Beto rises high and heads home, but he was over a yard behind the Blues backline.

30’ - There’s the perfect hat-trick for Palmer, and it comes from an embarrassing bit of goalkeeping from Pickford. With the ball outside his box, he tries to thread a tight pass into the middle of the park, and Palmer nips in and lobs the England #1, 3-0 and there’s a good chance we could have half a dozen goals today.

28’ - Garner has been pretty poor today so far, and now goes in the book too. Goes sliding into Palmer from behind. Probably should have done that in the first few minutes, not when the game is pretty much over.

23’ - Everton corner on the left, a chance to come back into it? Garner’s corner is very good into the six-yard box, but the hosts clear.

17’ - Coleman tugs Caicedo back, freekick to the hosts. Taken short and eventually comes into the box, shot saved by Pickford, but the ball pops up to an unmarked Palmer who heads in to make it 2-0 now.

16’ - Almost two there! Palmer somehow cannot corral the ball goalwards from about a yard out with the goal gaping.

13’ - What a goal from Cole Palmer. Beat Branthwaite all ends up with a nutmeg, controlled the ball, and then places it in the far post beyond Pickford’s reach. It’s been all Chelsea so far, and they deserve to be ahead, 1-0 to the hosts.

10’ - Chance! Young and Coleman combine well, the latter’s cross is hard and low, and Beto gets under it and it balloons over. The offside flag was up, but it looked close, would have been reviewed anyway.

8’ - Been all Chelsea so far, but Garner does well to win a corner on the left. Garner inswinger, Branthwaite makes contact but no direction, goalkick.

5’ - Mykolenko comes over to block a Madueke cross, corner. Corner is cleared well.

3’ - McNeil freekick, headed back across by Tarkowski and Chelsea clear.

2’ - Palmer and Gallagher combine right away and cut right through the middle of the Toffees, with the latter winning a freekick off Onana. Freekick is overhit and goes out.

1’ - Here we go, the hosts get us underway.

Everton - Dominic Calvert-Lewin appears to not have recovered from his training ground hamstring issue and has not travelled with the squad. Amadou Onana is fit again and starts, as does Ashley Young, whom Sean Dyche continues to prefer over Jack Harrison on the right wing.

“Dom’s got a tight hamstring, nothing more, so we’re happy in the sense that we think it will recover quickly. It was a tight call. We also lost Gana this morning who woke up with a tight calf.”

Chelsea - For the hosts, Mauricio Pochettino still has plenty of options despite a lengthy injury list.

Everton go back on the road after finally picking up their first league win since December, struggling to beat Burnley at Goodison Park a week ago. Tonight the Toffees are at Stamford Bridge, a ground they haven’t won at in league action since the early days of the founding of the Premier League.

Chelsea have made the headlines this season for all the wrong reasons, whether it’s for the humongous sums of money they have splashed in the transfer market, or bringing in Mauricio Pochettino formerly of local rivals Tottenham Hotspur, or the millions of pounds they have paid out in agent fees, or cooking the books to beat Profit & Sustainability Rules (PSR) by selling properties to themselves. On the pitch though, while they haven’t made any big progress up the table, they have become much more stable and harder to beat.

On that note, Everton today announced that they would be appealing the two-point penalty that was added recently.
