The openKylin project has announced the release of openKylin 3.0, a major upgrade of the project's Linux distribution for desktops and servers, with a custom desktop environment called UKUI and available for x86_64, AArch64 and Loong64 architectures: "OpenAtom openKylin (hereafter referred to as "openKylin") version 3.0 is officially released. The EndeavourOS project has a new release, which is acting as a filler between two major releases. EndeavourOS 2026.08.15 "Titan Nova" fixes some keyboard setup issues, improves support for NVIDIA GPUs, and removes the Budgie desktop environment as an install-time option. "Titan Nova's live environment and offline installer are shipping with Calamares 26.03.2.3, Firefox 153.0.4, Linux kernel 7.1.8, Mesa 26.1.7, X.Org Server 21.1.24, nvidia-utils 610.57.04, nvidia-open 610.54.01. Keyboard setup fix - fixed an issue where recent keyboard configuration updates caused setup errors. A temporary patch is in place to ensure everything configures smoothly, with a permanent fix planned in the upcoming Triton release. Improved the experience on the ISO when using the Nouveau drivers for NVIDIA GPUs. Budgie desktop removed - the option to install the Budgie desktop environment has been temporarily removed. The current upstream software version is in a transition phase to newer display technology (Wayland) and isn't providing a default experience we are comfortable with. The Butterbian project has announced the availability of Butterbian 0.4.0, the latest stable release of the project's Debian-based Linux distribution with out-of-the-box support for the Btrfs filesystem and pre-configured Timeshift that takes incremental snapshots of the installed filesystem at regular intervals. The new version of the distribution updates the visual aspects of its Xfce desktop: "Butterbian Xfce 0.4.0 is out. The snapshot-first foundation hasn't changed - Btrfs subvolumes laid out for you, a Timeshift snapshot before every apt operation, rollback from the GRUB menu. What changed is everything you look at. 0.3.3 looked like stock Xfce with a wallpaper, 0.4.0 looks like a distro. The wallpaper is a twilight scene drawn for this release - a lone lighthouse lamp on a dark ridge. The boot menu uses the same art, so it's one scene from power-on to desktop. Cottage and lantern variants ship alongside it, and the SVG sources are in the repo if you want to remix them. LightDM now gets the dark Butterbian treatment instead of stock gray - spotlight artwork, the Butterbian glyph as your account picture, and a login box that matches the rest of the system. Locking your screen takes you to the same place. The desktop theme is Orchis in its black variant - near-black, flat, blue accents, with matching window borders, so titlebars and applications finally agree with each other." The Haiku project has released a new development snapshot of the lightweight, single-user operating system. Haiku R1 Beta 6 introduces support for multiple web browsers and features a port of the NetBSD Virtual Machine Manager (NVMM), which provides hardware virtualization on x86_64 machines. "A few months after the R1/beta5 release, the first working web browsers based on the Mozilla Firefox codebase appeared in the software depots. They were initially quite buggy, and didn't use official branding. Over the last two years, things have gotten more stable (thanks to work both on the Haiku side and in the port itself), and recently Mozilla gave permission for the official 'Firefox' branding to be used. So if anyone asks 'Does Firefox run on Haiku?', you can now say 'Yes, it does!' A variety of other software based on the Firefox codebase is also now available in HaikuDepot, including LibreWolf, Waterfox, Floorp, Icedove (a de-branded version of Thunderbird) and more. (Note that Firefox and derivatives are only available for x86_64 at the moment. And since Haiku is still beta-quality software, if you encounter any missing features or incomplete functionality compared to Firefox on Linux or other OSes, that's probably our fault, not Mozilla's, and any such problems should be reported to HaikuPorts.)" The Armbian distribution is designed for ARM development boards and a range of other machines. The project's latest release, version 26.8.3, introduces a few key change, including a new system installer. "Most releases are a long list of small improvements. This one had three larger pieces landing at roughly the same time, and all three touch parts of Armbian that people use directly rather than parts they only read about in changelogs. The installer was rewritten. Armbian Imager reached 2.0. And our CI moved out of the repository it had outgrown into one built for the job. None of these were planned to coincide; they simply reached the point where postponing them again would have cost more than doing them. The installer rewrite is the one I expect people to notice first. It now ships as an armbian-config module, which means it is unit-tested, the same way the rest of armbian-config is tested, rather than living as a script that everyone was slightly afraid to touch. It can target SPI and MTD, treats eMMC and NVMe as separate flows instead of pretending they are the same thing, can flash a bootloader on its own, and - this one is overdue - reports when a bootloader write fails instead of printing 'Done.' and leaving you to find out at the next boot." PorteuX is a Linux distribution based on Slackware Linux. The project's latest version, PorteuX 2.8, introduces a new union filesystem and new compositing for Xfce. "This release is built around two new in-house projects: aufs-ng and xfwm4-gl. aufs-ng is our new union filesystem, written from scratch to replace aufs, which PorteuX has relied on since day one. It keeps the same on-disk format and the same mount command grammar, so everything keeps working as before. It's around 5,000 lines instead of Aufs's 28,000, and it uses the kernel's modern I/O passthrough, which means much less filesystem-wide locking, considerably faster copy-up thanks to in-kernel splice instead of page-by-page buffering, and it tracks inodes only, so a warm system uses about a third of the memory. It's the default from now on. xfwm4-gl is our fork of xfwm4 that finally brings OpenGL compositing to Xfce in X11, with XRender kept as an automatic fallback.
