It appears to be working well on a Trixie VM. I hugely appreciate the packaging effort for Debian, Devuan and Ubuntu here: https://github.com/xlibre-deb

If 3D acceleration is enabled in Virtualbox, windows glitch massively when moved, but that's an Oracle issue. I'll try it out on hardware this weekend if I have the time (PC: Nvidia proprietary, Laptop: AMD integrated)

PS: You need the latest (>=2.51.1) fastfetch from Github to display "XLibre" as the display server.

UPDATE

I am running KDE Plasma 6.3 here on Debian 13.1

XLibre (xlibre 7.8+3, xserver-xlibre-core 25.0.0.11-2) is running great with the NVidia proprietary drivers. I would advise any Debian and Devuan users to create a "/etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/nvidia-ignore-abi.conf" file, just to keep track of any custom configuration better.

I've tried a few Linux native games and I haven't noticed any issues. I'll update this post if I encounter problems with Wine/Proton games.

UPDATE 2

I finally got to install XLibre on my laptop. Remember to always encrypt your drives with a strong password, kids!

As a sidenote, libinput does support 3 finger gestures in 2025, however on KDE only Wayland supports touchpad gestures. There is no reason they couldn't achieve this on X11, they just won't do it 🤷🤷

Running Xlibre on DragonFlyBSD:

Mouse doesn't want work correctly out of the box (it appears there problem /usr/include/compat compat linux headers). The Xserver was not touched at all, the vesa driver needed some fixing.

First Custom ISO(s) using only XLibre

XLibre 1.25 on Debian 12 Bookworm and Ubuntu 24.04
Usage: Production ISOs for self-hosting HomeServer
DEs: LightDM, Budgie, Cinnamon, GNOME, KDE Plasma, MATE, and XFCE

Pretty good story behind this

I spent the first 3-4 months of this year scripting out these custom ISOs. The objective is to make things easier for less experienced folks to set up a home-based server. Its probably the easiest Linux installation on planet Earth (5 simple questions). It's all Debian-based, currently only Ubuntu 22.04/24.04, Debian 12, and Mint 22 are supported.

I had to do a bit of frankensteining to put together the most stable and consistent builds, i.e. Debian 12 comes with ifupdown networking default, and Ubuntu server comes with systemd-networkd, so had to tear those out and put in NetworkManager with Netplan (NM works better with desktop applets). I customized a bunch of other things as well, such as numerous packages required for the HomeServer, wallpapers, color schemes, a plymouth boot animation, etc. I originally had separate ISOs for each DE, but after building an all-in-one "Oliver" build, which includes all 6 of the above listed DEs, I've decided to just stick with that, as its the easiest to maintain.

Anyhow, the best part of the story, when I got to the display managers part, I decided to use LightDM as the initial login screen with Slick Greeter. From there, you can select your favorite DE and login. By default, GNOME and KDE push their wayland option to the front, and they are the default choices in the LightDM menu (without customization). Prior to this experience, I could honestly care less about which display manager to use. The only thing I care about is which one works.

During testing, I was constantly having strange unrepeatable issues with GNOME's wayland. Half the time it would load, other times would just hang. KDE's wayland had a couple of hiccups, but wasn't as bad. Anyhow, I got tired of the bugginess, and I didn't want to ship something like this to an inexperienced user. Plus, most VNC server packages require Xorg. So I entirely removed the wayland entries from the LightDM menu, since they serve no purpose. I kid you not, this was just a matter of weeks before all of the XLibre news broke. Had no idea what was going on. I'm typically too busy to care about the politics and I probably wouldn't even have tuned into the news, had I not spent excessive time pulling my hair out with wayland, lol.

After reading through everything that has happened, all I can say, is that you already had me at hello. It's truly a shame how much radical political extremism has infiltrated open-source software. I'm so very thankful that you all are on the right side of this, and that you took a stand. One passionate developer is worth more than 100 paid shills. There's clearly a lot of passion and energy behind this project by a lot of people so far, so I know its going to do well! I personally just want something that is stable and works, and X has proven itself over decades, so no interest in changing.

For my part, I will only and always ship ISOs with XLibre as default. If a DE decides to bail, well, that will be a sad day, as I'll have to remove it from the list. If XFCE (my go-to) leaves, that will be an even sadder day.

It hasn't gained a lot of traction yet because I'm a lone-wolf one-man operation atm, and I've spent the past 3.5 years full-time, purely on development. Don't have any time for "marketing". It's light years ahead of competing projects - like comparing boxes of bicycle parts to a polished Cadillac. If you have the time, it would be great if you stopped by, could use testers and stars.

They saved a TON of time on the custom builds. With Deb 13 "Trixie" just released, probably be looking into that at some point in the next few months. Not sure if the above repo applies to that or not, but not worried about it at the moment. With Ubuntu, I'm only focused on the LTS's, so quite a ways off. Since 26 is Plucky Puffin, it means that 28 will be Q or R? I just hope that its Quality Quahog rather than Retarded Reindeer, due to all of the radical religious extremism within Canonical.

Anyhow, keep up the great work! FWIW, you have my axe!

P.S. I spent like 4 hours on this darn updated gif. You guys just added this second page yesterday due to the loading issue, which means my post possibly exacerbates the issue. If it's a problem, then let me know and I'll change it out. But hopefully I can keep it up for at least a few days?

@homeserverhq I'm sorry, I think I missed this fact: You switched to XLibre as the default X11 display server and all the HomeServerHQ ISOs come with XLibre preinstalled, right?

Yes @callmetango, that is indeed the case. And I intend to keep it that way from here on out. The builds required some minor modifications - a lot more effort on the networking aspect rather than the display in this particular case (it was a breeze with X11Libre). Hopefully its this easy in the future, but I'm here for the hack.

I originally had numerous ISO builds, i.e. one for GNOME, Cinnamon, KDE, XFCE, etc - spread between Debian and Ubuntu. However, for simplicity, I reduced it all down to just a desktop and a server build for both Debian and Ubuntu, i.e. a total of four options (2x2). The desktop builds come with all 6 of the top DEs, i.e. Budgie, Cinnamon, GNOME, KDE Plasma, MATE, XFCE.

If you want to verify this, just download a desktop build and see for yourself :)

I tried to boot into the live image of debian-12.9-oliver-2025.09.02-hshq.iso, but unfortunately the live-config.service never finished. I've created the bug report Booting the Debian live image hangs at live-config.service · Issue #3 · homeserverhq/hshq to keep this section on focus.

Quick update: The error has been fixed and I was able to start the Debian Live Image without any problems.

Oh I'm sorry for the misunderstanding. I don't think the version number is somehow reported by the X server. I think it's best you query the version number using pacman. The command might be pacman -Q, but I am not sure.

which is a custom "skin" of GNOME and Arch Linux, it is a meme disro, but this image show that GNOME do work well with XLibre, it does app some pre-app themes with weeb like show in this image,

I am still very sad that GNOME will remove x11 competely in GNOME 50, i may not use it , but i know that some use it and like it, and it will a big shame if they are forced to use Wayland only cause even for me Wayland is not 100% ready for my use case so i use both xlibre with i3wm and i also use hyprland for the wayland session.

A memory optimized gentoo 32-bit install on the zero 2w with the magic of -Oz, -mthumb and musl libc.
The window manager is emacs with exwm and the font is uw-ttyp0.

you have to do only theese steps:

Build and install xlibre-xserver-bootstrap
Build and install xlibre-input-libinput
Build and install xlibre-xserver and confirm pacman's request to remove xlibre-xserver-bootstap
Build and install the xlibre-input/video packages that correspond to the removed xf86-input/video ones

it is easier with the bin package ... installing and compiling manually is way harder and kinda hard compared with that repo who do a part already for you ... plus it is a laptop and compiling sometime cause my linux system to freeze... i think it is cause i lack ram ... but i have 16 go of ram...

I only did what the AUR page told me to do, installing a bootstrap package and then compiling the rest as needed. I didn't touch anything else, didn't even do an upgrade.

for me it didn't work so i use the bin pkg arch - package and this is easy and the official repo

This is not the first image of XLibre running on DragonFlyBSD the credit for that goes to @cepelinas9000
But is is the first time the ports are running on it and they are running on real hardware too!
The next step is going to be setting up a CI system that outputs a pkg repo like what we have on FreeBSD.

Testing out this XLibre thing, see if it works as intended. So far, only got an issue with the touchpad being jumpy and less responsive, but I had that issue even on the Xorg xserver. Sometimes it fixes or breaks itself for some reason. Don't know what's wrong with it.

I used xlibre @ONykyf 's fork with branch on/ignore_abi_next

It works very well right now , games and proton games are working , render offload is working

The only noticable bug I have is that lightdm doesn't start so I need to launch xlibre with xfce manually

I found that Xlibre wasn't working instead I was using Xorg , But for some reason when typing X -version the output was XLibre X Server 1.25.0 But I was in fact using xorg not xlibre
anyway when I tried xlibre it worked but using steam or using render offload caused the screen to freeze

I use OpenRC, but before that i was using Runit. The first time i use Artix was with Dinit, works so easy and fast. OpenRC has Gentoo documentation, so is easy to create scripts to use some personal services, but with Runit and Dinit is much more simple to create and use services.

maybe broadcom wifi is proprietary wifi adapter drivers like on my old laptop that use qualcomm most distro maybe some distro on linux or BSD that doesn't work so well i recommend to upgrade wifi adapter card to compatibility to most distro or maybe you should use usb wifi temporary and install boardcom device on arch linux from arch linux wiki website (if you want to install arch linux or other fork that use arch)
