Please add any new screenshots to Thread 09!

This series of threads is all about sharing your enjoyment of what XLibre is best at: displaying things on the screen.

Liberate and Share Your Screen

You made XLibre a "first one on...!", your average person's daily driver or center of ricing and tinkering? Excellent! Please capture it and share your screenshot here. As you are onto it, we kindly ask you to mention what OS and distribution you are on, the desktop environment or window manager, your GPU and type of usage, etc. You may also include the output of fastfetch or one of its siblings in your shot.

If you like someone else‘s work, hit the like button on it and write a reply with your appreciation.

Please Treat the Others Nicely

In case you are new to the Liberated Screens or have questions, please see the Welcome to the Liberated Screens! thread. For anyone to have a good time here, also please stay on topic, only post screenshots related to XLibre, and respect the rules.

Thank you and enjoy!

Not the first XLibre on a new distribution (Slackware can hardly be considered new ;) ), but a legacy NVidia Geforce 210 card is back in action!

NVidia v.340 driver is revived (with lots of patches and tricks, of course, and patches to XLibre were also necessary) and works quite well. The Slackware package allows to keep Nouveau drivers and choose between them and NVidia 340 at boot time. Here is the proprietary driver running:

And Nouveau after reboot:

[callmetango]

Thank you for sharing! Very nice. For all: The screens were taken to prove the proprietary Nvidia driver v340 works with XLibre. Please see Readd support for proprietary Nvidia driver v340 · Issue #1330 · X11Libre/xserverj.

Ability and desire for constant self-learning – someone after my own heart : I’m 75 and still learning being entirely self educated in mechanical engineering - if you examine the fine examples of mechanical engineering of today scattered around the world and in history back to the ancient Greek’s school of mechanica! Were you quoting Pythagoras?
Wish I had discovered you a long time back – your website link is absolutely fantastic - so, so slick, so professional, so reactive without being OTT, tasteful wallpapers etc. I’m that impressed that I’m lost for words….. Well done you 🥇
You seem to be soaking up a lot of resource by the GiB – what’s your usual consumption at idle?
Wish you would sort out the mess that is Debian’s Trixie LXDE - it is horrific. I have my own LXDE-XLibre Debian version named Lexie. I am sure you could make a far superior offering than my amateur example. I think you would be an asset to any team – best wishes – thank you.

No, I am not quoting Pythagoras.
In standby mode, consumption is about 650 MB

Thank you! I'm glad you liked my site. 💜 I don't really prefer Debian. My main operating systems are Arch, KDE-Plasma void, and Void xfce.

[xgui4]

Wow !!!!!!! Didn't unity use mir ? or that only on mobile ?

[iainizer]

Unity7 didn't use Mir no
Unity8/Lomiri does
Part of me wishes Canonical never dropped Mir, it'd be really interesting to see how it would have turned out

Thank you for sharing! If you'd like to stay on KDE and X11, the SonicDE may be interesting for you. Quoting the README:

The community-driven Sonic Desktop Environment aims to preserve and improve the X11-specific aspects of KDE. It currently consists of the customized KWin/X11 and Plasma Desktop components.

Oh, thank you so, so much for alerting me to this!!

[xgui4]

is SonicDE the new name of kde lite but kde were angry and forced them to change name ?

[Lexie-LXDE]

Lite is "used in advertising to describe food or drink that contains less fat or sugar than usual"
1.2GiB RAM used at idle! 150MiB to 400Mib is lite or rather 'lightweight' in my reckoning.
This may be helpful? https://forum.garudalinux.org/t/1-2gb-ram-on-boot-up-anyway-to-slim-this-down/365

XLibre running on Li... Windows?

Yes! This is XLibre XWin running NATIVELY on Windows 10. (Compiled with Cygwin!)
This could possibly be the first instance of XLibre running on Windows!

Currently working on adding Cygwin patches to upstream to make it work.
Should work on MS W11.

Artix running on my Motorola G54 in Termux proot-distro, connected over RDP (xlibre-xorgxrdp patched thanks @artist4xlibre).

Termux:X11-xlibre next? :D

[hendrack]

I use RDP to connect from my shitty workplace PC with windows to my little desktop over USB tethering so I can look up something without ads cluttering half my screen space. And when I have my unpaid break I like to read ebooks, that's my usecase. ;)

You could use it as full fletched desktop depending on hardware, but termux without root does not allow for GPU passthrough, and even on root I did not succeed with opengl or Vulkan. Though firefox runs well enough in software rendering.

On a tablet you could use termux-x11 for ebook reading. I'am a bit picky with pdf and epub readers on Android.

[Lexie-LXDE]

Thanks for relieving my total ignorance - I now know a little about DRP and limitations of GPU pass-through 👍
GrapheneOS has its own version of chromium - Vanadium and has its own sandboxed pdf reader.
This protects against malware secreted in images and pdfs and Vanadium relieves advert intrusion :)
I congratulate you in sidestepping Windows during break time - top man - thanks again :)

[callmetango]

@hendrack Thank you for sharing! I think this is the "First one on Motorola G54!" and the "First one on termux!" And the first "Two first ones at the same time!" So, depending on how you count, at least two “First one!” at once. 👏👏

XLibre Arch (live) Nouveau driving a 1x card (yes, one - can use the MB expansion slots for other things):

[Lexie-LXDE]

So - what should I do? Are you still saying Hardinfo is displaying false information as to who the vendor is?
Are you saying that in all cases (now 6) that copying and pasting the install instructions has not installed XLibre?

[Lexie-LXDE]

Just quickly grabbed a Hardinfo screenshot from Dell with Loc-OS
Are you saying this information is not correct?

IMHO – fastfetch, neofetch, whatever may be ‘on trend’ as with conky – for myself I prefer Hardinfo as less susceptible to text edit. I also believe that Hardinfo looks deeper into the system and those Hardinfo devs know what they are about – see hardinfo org. There is of course no need to edit config files – I have never edited a config file :)
On this basis – Tango is quite wrong in attributing this ‘first with nouveau’ to yourself as Loc-OS on my Dell Latitude E6420 was clearly first – do you agree?
I do apologise if I am in error
See: https://itsfoss.gitlab.io/post/hardinfo2--check-hardware-information-in-linux/

[EeyoreTheDonkee]

do you agree?

Well, I'm not sure as I didn't look at all of the posts before I posted mine (how many posts back is it?). I mean there are 4 pages currently (it's awesome really - I hope it continues). But, did you claim that you were running XLibre and nouveau in your Loc-OS post in this discussion? If you did then you were the first to post it. But, if you didn't claim XLibre + nouveau then you weren't the first. I think the thing that makes my post easy to point out is the title.

Anyway, it hardly matters - you can be the first. I didn't win a prize or anything. I am really glad there are other people using XLibre + nouveau and Tango seems to be working pretty hard? Tango wrote "I think this is the first".. It's not a definitive statement. I'd cut Tango a break.. Without XLibre we will have less hardware and software choices.

[Lexie-LXDE]

Well, I'm not sure as I didn't look at all of the posts before I posted mine (how many posts back is it?)

callmetango messed up my posts by removing important information about Loc-OS so I removed all my posts – the pertinent Loc-OS post was about four posts above yours.
No need to claim a ‘first for nouveau’ as it was all there and a link to my secure Swiss Proton Drive was also included.
As with Thrust SSC world land speed record at 1227.985 km/h or 763mph there was no need to mention the ‘Sonic Boom’ breaking the speed of sound – nouveau – there is no prize for coming second – dig?
So you can understand I was a little pissed off at that time with my information being removed whilst others are allowed to repeatedly post large graphics and even videos directly.
Do you now agree that there is nothing wrong with the information via Hardinfo whereas fastfetch needs modification to extract vendor as XLibre?

[EeyoreTheDonkee]

Do you now agree that there is nothing wrong with the information via Hardinfo

Yes, I agree, nothing wrong with it at all.. But, you didn't post hardinfo, you posted faulty inxi output to this thread (which is what I responded to). Only after I pointed this out did you switch to hardinfo. Ok, I hope I'm done with this thread.

Xlibre running very well in intel HD Graphics 4600 with FreeBSD's i915kms. I also have NVIDIA QUADRO K1100M (used x11/xlibre-nvidia-driver-470), but unfortunately I couldn't run it due to ABI issues, I'll post the logs later.

I use cwm + urxvt only with xrdb configuration.

[jgtux]

Can you please provide the XLibre server version that this issue is occurring on?

Hi, 1.25.0

[b-aaz]

Hello, that is the major verison of the X server, can you provide the version of the xlibre-server package?

You can find it with pkg info | grep xlibre-server

This problem has been solved in X11Libre/xserver#558, and will be released with XLibre server version 25.1.0 in a few days.

@jgtux The XLibre 25.1.0 release has been pushed to both the main FreeBSD ports tree and my overlay.

Attempting to resurrect old XP CAD Workstation that would not boot – wrecked further by local ‘repair specialists’ – It was built by a friend back in 2008? Had to burn two DVDs via MX on 2008 Hp G60 Laptop as XP Workstation BIOS does not recognise bootable USB drive.
Bought replacement monitor – a £30 2009 24inch Samsung as old TFT was getting dodgy!
Note - 2, yes two, 450GiB HHD drives! Note 2008 Intel Core2 Quad Q8300. Note 2008 NVIDIA G96CGL [Quadro FX 580] driver: nouveau. OpenGL v: 4.5 compat-v: 3.3 vendor: mesa v: 25.0.7-2 glx-v: 1.4 direct-render: yes. Is this first XLibre on an old Quad Core?
Quite a change from WinXP Pro, SolidWorks and Serif PagePlus!
MX-25 Infinity + XLibre for now but will revert to Loc-OS to inject quantum speed + :)

[ReimuNotMoe]

XLibre running on FreeBSD 15. Everything is ultra smooth (comparing with the original Xorg) because of the TearFree support in the modesetting driver. This is now my daily driver. (I was a long-time Debian user but I'm really unhappy with Debian 13.)

[callmetango]

Thank you for your feedback and sharing your Liberated Screen here as well!

[fmc000]

Another FreeBSD screenshot - 14.3 with dual monitor setup and the good old CDE. Xlibre X Server release is 25.0.0.16 .

[callmetango]

Thank you for sharing! I think this is the "First one on CDE!" 👏

[fmc000]

I updated the "Are We XLibre Yet?" page with DM (dtlogin) and DE (CDE) accordingly.

Very nice. Thanks again!

Common Desktop Environment on XLibre with Artix Linux

[smj-cc]

Very cool. How'd you build CDE? I tried that awhile back and failed. Got an ebuild I could steal?

[Provectus18]

Xfce running on XLibre on FreeBSD 15-RELEASE. Best thing that ever happened for my desktop. Xorg used to perform break-dances when I scroll on on something and now it is fixed on XLibre, and the touchscreen works really nice. Everything is really fluid and snappy. It was really easy to install XLibre with the freshport.

[Lexie-LXDE]

miniMAX Phoenix – Risen from the ashes deleted on Hp G60 now with MX-25 XLibre installed.

miniMAX started way back with Trisquel-mini then to Arch and for many years as unsupported antiX-22 LXDE as seen here on this forum.
2008 WinXP Pro CAD Workstation has MX-25, Loc-OS LXDE and now miniMAX based on antiX-25 b2 iso just a few hours after release. All have Xlibre and CAD CAM :)
CAD and desktop look superb on this £30 2009 24 inch Samsung monitor :)
LXDE+XLibre v Xfce+XLibre = No Contest

[xgui4]

why does it show as "debian" if it is based on "antix" ????

[Lexie-LXDE]

AntiX like many other distros is based on Debian though some have freed themselves of 'systemd' loaded within stock Debian 👍
This is why some, like myself, use 'systemd' free antiX, Loc-OS and MX.
However I may be a complete fraud - an imposter; as some here reckon my 'Lexie' setup of Debian 13 does not even exist - lol 👎
Even more worrying is that member 'eeyore' writes that I'm not even running XLibre even though as you can see - Hardinfo system report clearly indicates I am.
I'm @ confused dot com - lol - I'm 75 you know - lol
Anyhow; thanks for examining the Hardinfo readouts above - what it does not reveal is that this is based on the testing version of antiX-25 as their current release is still antiX-23.
It also does not say just how impressive it all looks on that old 24 inch monitor or that for large assemblies and robotics using CAD & CAM it makes life so much easier, less zooming etc.
Edit: miniMAX - mini-mal resource usage = MAX imum Performance

Xlibre Qtile works pretty well

[Lexie-LXDE]

Thought qtile was a Window Manager not a DE - if so what is Nyatile? Nyarch Linux? Catgirls?
Is it light having no DE or very heavy as above?

[NerdyKimmy]

That's just my qtile config, not something else

[NerdyKimmy]

That's just my qtile config, not something else

I am just using what I like, so why can't I combine cute aesthetics, light theme, etc with xterm, runit, xlibre, Emacs and such legacy truly free solutions? Not all people who like cute things are Arch BTW Hyprland Unixporn femboys. I think my own rice would be so unusual among theirs because it has a truly different vibe at all.

[callmetango]

@NerdyKimmy Thank you for sharing and your feedback! I set the status of Qtile to "working" in Are We XLibre Yet? · X11Libre/xserver Wiki.

[xgui4]

Qtile-Extras with Gradient Border With Picom , work !

Graduent Border :

Gaming Also Work :

This is on EndeavourOS with the LTS kernel as the main with proprietary nvidia driver.

I am getting close to emulate a Hyprland like experience on XLibre :)

[xgui4]

btw the top bar is the qtile bar. i did customise my kitty shell to use the fish shell with starship.rs and a mix of catputching and dracula color scheme.

[xgui4]

I did try the Wayland session and it is slower and nothing of these effects seem to work. So for anyone wanting to try QTile i recommend to try the X11 session.
