With winter approaching and the days getting shorter, health experts are recommending light therapy lamps to help offset seasonal symptoms linked to reduced sunlight.
According to sleep cycle expert Dr. Timo Partonen, October marks the ideal time for those prone to seasonal symptoms to begin using a therapy lamp.
During this period, many people experience changes in sleep patterns, mood, energy levels, and appetite, including increased sugar cravings.
Research has shown that regular exposure to bright light in the morning can help ease these symptoms. Experts recommend using a light therapy lamp for approximately 30 minutes between 6am and 10am, at least five days a week.
Partonen notes that when used correctly, light therapy can reduce fatigue, improve mood, and increase both physical activity and sociability.
While daylight hours will continue to decrease in the coming months, this trend will reverse after December 21, the winter solstice, after which days will gradually begin to lengthen again.
