Video: This week in Finland, 16 October 2026

This week's headlines included long A&E queues, Finland's new baby box, a push for stricter homeschooling laws and Yle's puppy livestream going international.

Here are some of the stories making headlines this week:

  • The Finnish government has agreed on a 60 million euro package to ease rising fuel costs. Measures include a vehicle tax cut, a higher commuting expense deduction, and fuel subsidies for transport, agriculture and forestry sectors.
  • Finland's new maternity 'baby box' will be filled with 52 products. That's 14 more items than last year, and includes clothes, muslin cloths, a blanket, sleeping bag, book, nail scissors and a toothbrush.
  • Helsinki, Tampere and four other Finnish cities want stricter homeschooling laws. Helsinki Mayor Daniel Sazonov (NCP) says school attendance should be compulsory — except for health reasons.
  • Yle's livestream of a mother dog and her newborn puppies (Puppy Live, or Pentulive in Finnish) is gaining interest from abroad. Finland's 24/7 feed shows the litter of pups for about eight weeks. Pentulive is also being streamed by Swedish public broadcaster SVT.
