|
| Sorcerer is a source-based Linux distribution. Source tarballs are downloaded directly from software project home pages or as patches when an old source was previously downloaded. Sources are compiled for the architecture and with the optimisations that the system administrator specifies. Sorcerer has both command-line and menu-driven source management programs.

The Sorcerer project has released a new Install/Rescue disk, version 20040620: "This new Install/Rescue disk is surgically clean and precise. It's smaller than the previous one because it contains only one Linux source version 2.6.7. Do you remember traditional device names? This release features a udev populated /dev mounted on ramfs. Since devfs is being deprecated from the Linux 2.6 kernel we are moving back to the old naming system. Its build system is powered by a 3rd generation, bug fixed, speed enhanced sorcery release name Sol. Second only to yourself it will be the light and warmth that brings life to your Sorcerer boxes.". A new Sorcerer Install/Rescue ISO images has been released. What's new? "There is a new menu item on kernel menu to select before compiling a kernel. The new entry displays system information which may discover and report some of the installed hardware. It may save the SA a minute or two of exploring /proc when installing on unknown hardware. Finally, the pre-compiled Install/Rescue kernel is now linux 2.6.6. That may work to the advantage of system administrators trying to install Sorcerer on extremely new hardware if the only drivers that support it are in linux 2.6.x." It has been a while since we brought you news about a Sorcerer release, but that's because the developers don't publish a changelog and don't normally announce new releases. However, version 20040428 was announced on the distribution's mailing list: "I have rolled out a new Install/Rescue disk. The importance of libpcap is that ppp now requires it. In addition to more than some 12 spells on the Install/Rescue disk being updated the new disk has four text editors to choose from: elvis/vi, nano, jed and joe. Excited yet? Okay how about being able to install: linux,v2.6 or linux,v2.6-grsecurity or linux,v2.4 or linux,v2.4-grsecurity straight from the Install/Rescue disk? Choose only one of course." OSNews reviews the source-based Sorcerer distribution: "One of the strengths of Sorcerer is the ability to quickly and easily update your box with the latest application versions. However, this can cause some commercial apps to no longer work because they require an older set of library files. It is possible to get around this problem by manually installing the older libraries, and whether you do this would depend on how much you need the application. Sometimes for us it is just easier to have a box running Red Hat, Mandrake, or SUSE and keep the commercial applications running on there." Read the full 3-page review with screenshots.

For all those who wrote in requesting clarification on the status of Sorcerer GNU/Linux, here is a nice summary, courtesy of Linux Weekly News: "Last week we reported that Sorcerer GNU/Linux (SGL) was no longer available. Numerous people wrote in with additional information, so this week we have a more complete story to tell. It's the kind of story that illustrates that a good open source project is difficult (if not impossible) to kill." You can read the full story here, but to sum it up, the project continues under the original name, while a second, more ambitious fork, called Lunar Penguin, continues a separate development. The LWN article has a good summary; we will of course monitor both projects, adding a separate Lunar Penguin page shortly.

Sorcerer not Dead |

"Sorcerer GNU/Linux is not dead", according to the joined statement released by the Sorcerer team: "It was only through the extraordinary efforts of a very committed group of people that SGL was able to remain alive." The statement concludes: "What you are seeing here is not the death of SGL. You are seeing the beauty and power of truly free software at it's very best. The story goes like this: Kyle Sallee, the creator and lead developer of Sorcerer GNU Linux announced last month that he would no longer be able to devote himself fully to this project. He also closed the Sorcerer web site over the weekend. Nevertheless, some of the Sorcerer contributors and spell maintainers are keeping the project alive. Currently there seem to be two forks of the project. One of them, while keeping the original name unchanged, has set up a new web site, while the second fork has renamed the project to Lunar Penguin. There isn't much difference between the two at this stage and it remains to be seen whether the two projects merge or whether they'll go separate ways. Both projects offer simple hacks to modify your existing Sorcerer installation to provide for updates. The original mailing lists were independent of the project and remain active. Sorcerer GNU Linux has gained a large number of followers over the last few months and risen to the number one spot in our page hit ranking. There seems to be no danger of the projects disappearing and DistroWatch will keep an eye on the developments.

LinuxWorld reviews Sorcerer GNU Linux: "Sorcerer allows you to build and maintain a Linux system based on the very latest stable source code for each component, from the kernel to X, compiled on and for your machine. Unfortunately, Sorcerer's magic might vanish soon." With the increasing user base of this distribution and the associated pressure on the original creator and maintainers, the software database (grimoire) is going to be maintained by volunteers. The logistics of this transition period are still being worked out and you can check out the discussion on the official mailing list and the recently created Unofficial SGL Forum. |
