Aiden McClelland has announced the release of a major new version of StartOS, a Debian-based Linux distribution optimised for personal servers, available for AArch64, riscv64 and x86_64 architectures: "Version 0.4.0 is a complete rewrite of StartOS. After six years of building, we believe we have arrived at the correct architecture and foundation to deliver on the promise of sovereign computing. Highlights: redesigned UI - faster, more intuitive, mobile-friendly, with a real-time system metrics dashboard; completely new networking stack - LAN port forwarding, Wireguard VPN gateways, private and public domains (clearnet), Let's Encrypt, built-in DNS, and Tor as an optional plugin; StartTunnel - free, open-source reverse tunnel to expose services on a public domain without revealing your home IP; LXC container runtime - replacing Docker/Podman with a reliable, nested container architecture supporting hardware acceleration and multi-container setups; improved backups - differential backups, cross-server restore, and a new FUSE module for cross-platform reliability...." Continue to the release notes for a full changelog and upgrade instructions. |
| StartOS is a Debian-based Linux distribution optimised for personal servers. It facilitates the discovery, installation, network configuration, service configuration, data backup, dependency management and health monitoring of self-hosted software services. After installation, the distribution boots into a Firefox browser with several services pre-installed and others, including various Bitcoin, communication, data and artificial intelligence services available from the project's online marketplace. The server can be accessed locally or from anywhere in the world via Tor network's Onion service. The distribution is developed by Start9 Labs, Inc.

Rockstor
Rockstor is a specialist openSUSE-based Linux distribution designed for Network Attached Storage (NAS) and private cloud storage solutions. It is based on popular open-source technologies, such as the Btrfs file system and Docker for automating the deployment of applications inside software containers. In addition to standard NAS features like file sharing via NFS, Samba, SFTP and AFP, advanced features such as online volume management, CoW Snapshots, asynchronous replication, compression, and bitrot protection are also supported. Rockstor provides additional applications, including ownCloud, Syncthing, OpenVPN and Plex. These applications (called "Rock-ons") are powered by a Docker-based application hosting framework. The Rockstor user interface, written in JavaScript, makes it simple to manage the server from within a web browser.
