Chinese 2000, a Linux distribution produced by Hong Kong-based Culturecom Holdings, is now available as a free download: cd1gpl102.iso (638MB). As the file name indicates, this is a GPL version stripped of 20 proprietary Chinese fonts as well as KaiOffice (a Chinese enabled, modified version of OpenOffice) found in the boxed version. The distribution's product page is long on detail. It is interesting to note that Culturecom's Vice President is Henry Chu, a well-known figure in Taiwan where he is often referred to as "the father of Chinese computing". Henry Chu is the inventor of Cang Jie, a Chinese character input method based on character shapes rather than phonetic symbols -- a 1980 invention which led to rapid increase in adoption of computer technology throughout the Chinese speaking world. LormaLinux
LormaLinux was developed by the MIS Department of Lorma Colleges in the Philippines. It was built on top of Red Hat Linux - recompiled and optimized for the i686 computers, so it was faster and leaner. Perfect as a workstation and it comes on only 1 CD. It also contains software from the Linux Terminal Server Project (LTSP) for setting up diskless workstations. It uses KDE for its desktop environment and was constantly being updated. LormaLinux was a full-featured Linux distribution specifically made for ease of use and functionality.
