Named Laumonit by Abraham Gottlob Werner in 1805 in honour of Franรงois Pierre Nicolas Gillet de Laumont (28 May 1747, Laumont near Montmorency, France - 1 June 1834, Paris, France), Inspector General of Mines who first found the mineral (as well as plumbogummite). He was also a mineral collector. The name was changed to its current spelling, Laumontit, in 1821 by Karl Cรคsar von Leonhard.
Zeolite Group.
A partially dehydrated variety of laumontite is called leonhardite. Leonhardite seems to be stabilised by the presence of Na and K (see literature on leonhardite page).
Normally laumontite dehydrates in air to crumble, more or less slowly, into a white powder. Specimens should be kept moist to prevent decomposition.
Stoichiometrically, apart from water content, very similar to gmelinite-(Ca) and wairakite.
