A fun scrappy weekend

The weather this weekend was totally miserable but when you have a house of 6 girls and a heap of scrappy stuff, it can only mean a great weekend. Plenty of food, laughs and scrapping from Saturday morning til Sunday night.

I didn't scrap much, was too busy talking and making pizzas, but enjoyed it.

Another week

Its been pretty quiet up here. Still flat after Yasi. Headaches galore, but aaahhh well, they'll go away. More important things in life.

How bad is Christchurch today?! How much more natural disasters can this part of the world take. The governments will have no money soon to fix anything! Feel so sad for the kiwis. We at least had warning that a cyclone was coming and had time to prepare and bunker down. They were strolling along minding their own business and then boom, buildings falling down. So devastating.

Rang mum and dad today - still can't believe their mobile worked in the middle of the ocean. For those who don't know, mum and dad left Melbourne on 12th Feb for a 13 day cruise around NZ. I knew they were already steaming home but rang mum and asked if they had gotten to dock in Christchurch/Lyttleton last week and they did (they weren't sure before they left if they would be due to Sept earthquake last year). I then asked if they went to the cathedral and they said they went to the square where it was. I then told her what had happened as they hadn't heard anything about it on the cruise. They sounded a bit shocked. Yet again, one of their holidays has disaster after they've left (they left Egypt 3 days before the bus massacre all those years ago). Anyway, they will be back in Melbourne tomorrow morning.

Had a great lunch with my masseuse Tania on Sunday at my favourite restaurant. The weather was perfect.

Better go clean the house and start prepping for the weekend.

Challenge Masters Week 1

Have had a great time using up my Echo Park papers, amongst others, while doing the challenges over at Challenge Masters. The girls there come up with the most amazing challenges that get you up and scrapping. These are some of my week 1 entries.

Birthday get together for Vicki

It wasnt the best day for a drive, but I jumped in the rocket and headed off to Innisfail to meet Mel and Vicki ( and Vicki's daughter Rachel) for lunch. Vicki's birthday was on Yasi Day so it was a bit belated. Had a great feed at The Coffee Club, owned by fellow scrapper Sharon.

It was pretty wet on the drive down, but sitting across from the river, the sun was out and it was a perfect day. On the way back, it didn't rain at all. And it was amazing to look around and see the flattened banana plantations. Other than these, you wouldn't have known a cyclone had gone through the area.

Aussie Scrap Jacked February Entry

The girls at Aussie Scrapjacked have released the February challenges. I thought that I would get at least one done this month and get in early. Not one of my best layouts, but ok. I chose to jack Vicki. I turned it sideways.

Weekend after a weird week

After a very weird week, its now the weekend. Time to clean up the house and get it back into order. Tape off windows, furniture back outside, reconnect gas, and clean up the yard ready for green waste collection.

On a positive note throughout all the drama, I found out that I was a winner for January for Aussie ScrapJacked. I also won a prize over a Challenge Masters for my paper piecing card. So chuffed to be chosen for my scrapping rather than through a popularity contest.

A very quiet weekend otherwise. And a card I made last week that I didn't have time to post here.

The aftermath of Cyclone Yasi

Wow! How lucky are we?! Throughout the whole cyclone, we had power and internet and Austar. Until 1.30am I was riding out Yasi watching Sky News and watching the news traffic on Facebook. I was chatting to so many friends around Australia and the world, letting them know everything was ok so far. We have now lost the home phone, internet and mobile service.

As you can see below, the winds became quite ferocious. Some of the gusts made the house creak, but nothing to the extent of what I thought. Even at midnight it felt like we were in the eye it was so calm. Thank goodness though that Cairns dodged a bullet - again. It was heading for us and turned at the last minute again, just like Larry.

This morning we have found heaps of branches everywhere, leaves in their thousands all over the place, and we can even see our neighbours on the other side of the creek, now that the trees have thinned out. The only damage we had was a panel of fencing between us and our neighbour
had keeled over in the wind.

It was a weird cyclone (not that I've been through one, but from what Cameron as saying), it kept gusting and then going quiet, and the second have was not strong or damaging at all. And no torrential rains so far.

Cameron just got back from a drive around town and said it is torrential rain in Cairns CBD, my work is close to flooding too. So Mt Sheridan got off very lightly.

Cyclone Yasi is bearing down

Panic is setting in slightly. Went to work this morning (Cameron drove me to work as he didn't want me to drive the rocket in the wind) to find that the whole office was packed up and ready to move offsite. We were only there about 20 minutes and it was then straight back home.

We brought everything in from outside and put stuff iin the shed. After we saw our neighbours covering the whirlies on their roof, we went and asked them why, and then Cameron decided to do ours. Unfortunately while he was up there he found some cracked tiles, which is a bit worrying.

We then parked the rocket up as close to the front door as possible and taped our windows. By 3pm the wind was starting to pick up. The sky was a whitish-grey, really weird.

Its now 6pm and we're getting blown off the front verandah. The trees were going sideways. Time to go inside and bunker down in the main bedroom and ensuite.

Cyclone Yasi is coming

Well, I think I'm going to see my first cyclone. It was panic at work today with one hour long queues at the petrol station with everyone panicking and getting fuel. There are reports of people fighting over loaves of bread, and the supermarket shelves are bare. Banks closed at 2pm to get ready to bunker down.

I will be going into work in the morning to help pack up the computers. Cameron and I need to start getting candles, food, water, etc ready tonight.
