About

YouTube history, coverage, features

YouTube is an online video-sharing and social media platform owned by Google since 2006. Founded just over a year before the Google acquisition, YouTube has gone on to become the number one video-sharing platform and one of the most visited websites in the world, broadcasting everything from entertainment and educational videos to live sports.

The website was founded on February 14, 2005, by three former PayPal employees, inspired by the inaccessibility of clips of Janet Jackson’s infamous wardrobe malfunction at the Super Bowl XXXVIII halftime show. While the site did not begin as a video-sharing platform, it quickly transitioned into that, with the very first YouTube video uploaded on April 23, 2005.

Interestingly, a Nike ad featuring Brazilian and Barcelona legend Ronaldinho performing the crossbar challenge was the first YouTube video to hit 1 million views, achieving this milestone by November 2005. The following month, YouTube exited beta before eventually being acquired by Google for $1.65 billion about a year later.

Following the Google acquisition, YouTube went on to tremendously diversify its video content, incorporating everything from live streams to sports coverage. The latter enjoyed a meteoric rise in the 2010s, with one of the earliest milestones being the launch of KickTV in 2012, a premium YouTube channel featuring original soccer programming, goal compilations, as well as content on the 2012 Euro Championships, the 2014 World Cup, and several MLS All-Star Games.

Eventually, sports broadcasters, competition organizers, and clubs joined the platform to create official channels for social media content and marketing. This includes the Premier League, FIFA, NBC Sports, CBS Sports, ESPN, Barcelona, Real Madrid, Manchester United, and many others.

Soccer-related content on YouTube can include short or extended match highlights, classic games, replays, interviews, breakdowns, and more. While the biggest soccer competitions are typically not broadcast on the free-to-use YouTube platform, some broadcasters have streamed major competitions on the site. This includes DAZN, which has broadcast live UEFA Women’s Champions League games for free on its YouTube channel, including the UWCL Final, after acquiring the rights to the competition in 2021.

In March 2026, YouTube made history by reaching a media partnership deal with FIFA in the lead-up to the 2026 FIFA World Cup in the USA, Canada, and Mexico. Under this deal, the video-sharing website was designated a Preferred Platform by world football’s governing body, granting the Google-owned site permission to publish extended highlights, behind-the-scenes footage, shorts, and video-on-demand content for the tournament.

For the first time in history, FIFA allowed official 2026 World Cup broadcasters to stream the first 10 minutes of every game live on their official YouTube channels. Additionally, this media rights deal allowed broadcasters to stream select FIFA World Cup 2026 matches in full on their YouTube channels.

Another turning point for YouTube in the soccer broadcast scene was the launch of YouTube TV, the platform’s subscription over-the-top streaming television service. Thanks to this service, YouTube began distributing a selection of live linear channel feeds and on-demand content via a dedicated website, app, and digital media players.

This includes major sports broadcasters in the USA, such as ESPN, ESPN Deportes, FS1, FS2, TUDN, beIN SPORTS, NFL Network, NBA TV, SEC Network, ACC Network, CBS Sports Network, and more. It should be noted that YouTube TV does not own broadcast rights for major soccer competitions but instead has—or has had in the past—carriage agreements with the official U.S. rights holders to competitions such as the Premier League, UEFA Champions League, La Liga, Serie A, the Euros, and the prestigious FIFA World Cup.

Both the YouTube and dedicated YouTube TV apps are available across most internet-connected devices, such as smartphones, tablets, smart TVs, streaming devices, and more. This includes the iPhone and iPad, Android phones and tablets, Apple TV, Android TV, Google TV, Roku devices, the Amazon Fire TV Stick and Cube, and select Xbox and PlayStation gaming consoles.

The two apps also support Chromecast and AirPlay, allowing for additional viewing experiences. Viewers can also access YouTube and YouTube TV via their official websites using modern web browsers such as Chrome, Edge, Safari, and Firefox.

While YouTube is available for free globally, YouTube TV is a subscription-based streaming service available only in the USA. The platform offers different subscription tiers without requiring annual contracts or installations. Additionally, YouTube TV offers or has offered additional add-ons such as HBO Max and NFL Sunday Ticket, all of which are available within the YouTube TV app.
