About

Univision USA history, coverage, features

Univision is a Spanish-language American television network owned by TelevisaUnivision. Founded in September 1962, the network is one of the largest in the USA catering to the Latin American and Hispanic communities, broadcasting everything from telenovelas and drama series to live sports.

The creation of Univision dates back to the establishment of the KMEX-TV station in September 1962, which, alongside KWEX, was part of the Spanish International Network (SIN). It was later relaunched in the 1980s as Univision.

The network has a rich history of airing live sports, including on its main channel of the same name. This includes soccer, which Univision broadcasts alongside its sister channels, UniMás and Galavision.

The sports division, Univision Deportes, has historically managed the production of sports content on Univision, UniMás, Galavision, and the cable-satellite sports channel TUDN. Some of the most prominent soccer competitions featured on Univision include Liga MX, select matches involving the men’s national teams of Mexico and the USA, and the Concacaf Gold Cup.

Additionally, Univision held the Spanish-language broadcast rights to the FIFA World Cup from 1970 to 2014 and the FIFA Women’s World Cup from 1999 to 2011 before losing those rights to Telemundo and NBC Universo.

One of the most prestigious tournaments broadcast on Univision is the UEFA Champions League. The network acquired the rights to this competition—alongside the Europa League and later the Conference League—in 2018. This broadcast rights deal was extended for an additional three years in 2023 in an arrangement worth a reported $225 million.

The network also sub-licensed the Spanish-language rights to the 2025 FIFA Club World Cup from DAZN, broadcasting the tournament in the USA. This included games from both the group stage and the knockout round, culminating in the final between Chelsea and PSG.

Other popular competitions broadcast on Univision include the Leagues Cup, Copa America, the European Championship, and the UEFA Nations League, as well as the Super Bowl in partnership with CBS and the NFL.

As one of the most prominent Spanish-language networks in the USA, Univision, which broadcasts in HD, has enjoyed extensive cable, satellite, and streaming television coverage. This includes providers like Cox, Spectrum, DirecTV, Xfinity, Dish, and YouTube TV, as well as the network’s own streaming service, Univision NOW.

Univision NOW is available for free to viewers with a subscription to a television provider that carries Univision, but it is also offered via a standalone subscription.
