About

CBS Sports Network history, coverage, features

CBS Sports Network, also known as CBSN, is an American English-language sports network available on cable and satellite television. It was launched in 2002 as the National College Sports Network and is owned by Paramount Global’s CBS Entertainment Group, which acquired CBSN in 2006 following Viacom's acquisition the previous year.

Originally founded as the National College Sports Network and later renamed College Sports Television (CSTV), the channel began as a subscription-based sports network that offered 24-hour coverage of college sports. For the first few years under Paramount Global, it maintained this focus. In February 2008, it was rebranded as CBS College Sports Network after the acquisition.

In February 2011, the channel underwent another rebranding, changing its name to CBS Sports Network to signify its expansion into non-collegiate sports events. Since then, the network has aired some of the largest competitions, including European soccer.

CBS Sports Network began broadcasting select UEFA Champions League and UEFA Europa League games, including finals, when ViacomCBS secured the rights for the 2019-20 to 2023-24 seasons. Additionally, the channel started airing the UEFA Conference League (initially known as the UEFA Europa League Conference League) when it launched in 2021, coinciding with the network’s UEFA rights cycle.

The network has also featured the UEFA Super Cup, Scottish Professional Football League, Serie A, English League Cup, and NWSL. CBS Sports Network has also covered other professional sports competitions, such as the PGA Tour, WNBA, Major League Rugby, and the Canadian Football League; however, the availability of these and other events depends on broadcast rights agreements, which can change.

Additionally, NCAA college football, college basketball, college baseball, college softball, and college lacrosse have all been staples on CBS and CBS Sports Network, branded as “NCAA on CBS.”

CBS Sports Network, along with other CBS channels, is typically available on most major cable and satellite TV providers in the USA. However, availability is subject to agreements between the TV providers and the network. For instance, in July 2019, two CBSN carriers, DirecTV and AT&T U-verse, removed the channel due to disputes with CBS Corporation but re-added it a month later after reaching a deal. CBSN has also been available for streaming on platforms like fuboTV, DirecTV Stream, and Hulu + Live TV.
