About Primera B Metropolitana

History, Format, Organization, Media Coverage

The Primera División B, also called Primera B Metropolitana, is one of the Argentinian football system's two professional leagues under the country’s third football division. It is organized by the Asociación del Fútbol Argentino, who created this competition in 1987 as the Primera B Metropolitana. The league has undergone several changes to its format but is typically contested from February to December every year.

Each year, the league's clubs feature in different tournaments: the Apertura (held between February and June), the Clausura (which goes on from July to October), and the Torneo Reducido, held during November and December. The first two competitions see all teams facing each other once, giving the winner of each tournament the chance to play for the promotion in a two-legged tie. A team that wins both tournaments may be promoted automatically to the Primera Nacional category. An additional promotion is available via the Torneo Reducido, played by six teams (if there is a title match) or eight teams (if a team wins both competitions). Two-leg ties are played to determine the winner of this tournament. Since its creation, the number of teams has changed from 17 to 22.

The league has established an aggregate table with the results of the Apertura and the Clausura tournaments, and the team with the lowest number of points gets relegated to the Primera C league. Since 1986, the Primera B Metropolitana's structure allows for promotion to Argentina's Primera Nacional and relegation to the Primera C.

All Primera División B teams are located close to Buenos Aires or within the nation’s capital. Some of the most popular football clubs to ever play in this league include Chacarita Juniors, Defensa y Justicia, Atlético Tucumán, Banfield, and Lanús, among many others. Banfield and Ferro Carril Oeste have historically won the most Primera B championships, with seven titles each.
