About Professional Development League
History, Format, Organization, Media Coverage
The Professional Development League is an English football league for under-21 teams from Category Two Academies. It was established in the 2016-17 season, replaced the Under-21 Professional Development League 2, and operates one tier below Premier League 2, which features Category 1 academy clubs.
The number of participants in this league has varied over the years, with some clubs gaining promotion to Category 1 while others are relegated to Category 3. However, the Professional Development League format has remained stable, with teams divided into two regional divisions: North Division and South Division.
Each Professional Development League team plays every other club in its group, home and away while facing teams from the opposite group once. At the end of this round, the top two teams from each group advance to the knockout stage to determine the champion.
The semifinals and final of the Professional Development League are held in May, with each match played over a single leg. If the score is level after 90 minutes, extra time and, if necessary, a penalty shootout determine the winner. This competition has no promotion or relegation, and teams may field only three over-age outfield players and one over-age goalkeeper.
Sheffield Wednesday won the inaugural Professional Development League in its current format, while Charlton Athletic claimed the first Under-21 Professional Development League 2 title in the 2012-13 season. The 2019-20 season was cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
