About I-League
History, Format, Organization, Media Coverage
The I-League is a soccer competition from the Indian system. It is the second most relevant league in that country behind the Indian Super League. It was founded in 2007 as a replacement to the National Football League. The league was supposed to be the top-tier soccer category in the country, but after years of sharing that honor with the Indian Super League, it was finally demoted to become a second tier in 2022. The league is overseen by the All India Football Federation.
The competition was initially contested by ten teams, but that number has increased to twelve as time has gone by. The league works under a promotion-relegation system, although that does not work both ways. The league promotes a team to the Indian Super League and relegates two clubs to the I-League 2, thus opening two spots for promoted teams from the I-League 2. Nonetheless, the league does not add any teams from the Indian Super League, as relegation from that competition is not an option to help boost the top category.
Over the years, the format has also changed to accommodate all teams involved. Each team plays twice against its opponents on a home-and-away system, where the team that wins the most points gets promoted to the Indian Super League. On the other hand, the team with the worst record gets the drop to I-League 2.
Teams such as Dempo, Churchill Brothers, and Bengaluru are some of the teams that have been able to win the I-League on multiple occasions.
