About Primera División Femenina
History, Format, Organization, Media Coverage
The Primera División de la Liga de Fútbol Femenil, or Liga F, is the top club competition in Spain’s women’s football. It is one of the most prominent women’s football leagues worldwide. Founded in 1988 under the name Liga Nacional, the league experienced many changes to its name caused by negotiations between the Royal Spanish Football Federation and past sponsors, which led to a rebranding into Liga F. After many years, the league finally earned its professional status before the start of the 2021-22 season.
Like in most European leagues, Liga F works under a promotion and relegation format. Each season, sixteen teams face each other twice to determine the championship and the names of the teams involved in continental tournaments. Additionally, the league relegates two teams, usually those earning the lowest points after 30 games. Although some exceptions have occurred, the league usually kicks off in September and ends in May.
Added to its relevance for what goes on on the pitch, Liga F has also become a standard in the search for equal pay between men and women. The union representing the players’ interests has previously decided to go on strike, demanding better wages for all footballers. The latest occurrence was after Spain's Women's Football National Team claimed the FIFA Women’s World Cup title in 2023.
Liga F has become known worldwide for being very competitive, seeing as many as twelve teams lifting the title. Barcelona, Athletic Club, Levante, and Atlético Madrid are among those who have lifted the title in the past. Barcelona are among the most dominant clubs in the league's history.
The Women’s Primera División in Spain has historically profited from sponsorship and broadcasting deals. Such contracts include the agreement with Iberdrola, who sponsored the league for many years. The league gained further recognition by partnering with global sports streaming service DAZN in 2022.
