Ettan Fotboll, commonly known as "Ettan," is Sweden’s third-tier men’s football league. Managed by the Swedish Football Association (SvFF), it was established in 2006 as a reboot of Division 1, which served as the second-tier league from 1987 to 1999 before the introduction of Superettan in 2000.
Ettan operates on a spring-to-autumn schedule, starting in March or April and concluding in November. The league features 32 clubs divided into two divisions: Norra and Södra, each consisting of 16 teams. It employs a double round-robin format, with each club facing every other side in their division twice, both home and away.
The champions of the two divisions gain automatic promotion to Superettan, while the runners-up from Norra and Södra compete in a two-legged playoff against the third and fourth-lowest-placed teams in Superettan for two additional promotion slots.
Conversely, the bottom three teams in each division (six total) are automatically relegated to Division 2, Sweden’s fourth-tier league. The fourth-from-bottom teams in the Norra and Södra divisions enter a relegation playoff with two Division 2 runners-up to determine who will remain in Ettan.
Djurgårdens IF and GAIS won the Norra and Södra divisions respectively during the inaugural season of Division 1, Ettan’s predecessor. During Ettan's first campaign, Enköpings SK and IF Sylvia secured victory in the north and south divisions.
