Chilli seedling

Three little chillies growing up on the vegetable bed.

They are suppose to produce long red chillies. I never have luck with them in past year due to white bugs.

Hope I can fight the bugs before they attacked the chilli plant this time!

Cili Padi

When do you identify something in garden is in abundance? When you share with family? friends? more than what you consume?

As of now I have cili padi in abundance. I seldom use them. Most of them are self seed chillies. I share them with neighbours, family and with birds! Yet many just turn red and wasted.

I wonder what type of bird eat this chillies. They are spicy though!

Green Chillies

It's been some times that I planted big chillies.

Some of the chilli plants was gone due to heat last few months. The survivors are here with thin chillies. I think I need to fertilize them well. I use them while cooking vegetables. They give a taste of spiciness to the vegetables!

This type are not hardy type. The previous seedling was very strong. I must sow the new seeds soon.

The spicy Chillies

 

Cili padi is very spicy chilli. Few chillies are enough to bring tears to your eyes. Some eat this chillies with soy sauce. Definitely I'm not one of them....

 

 

I use this chillies as substitutes to big chillies for vegetable stir fry or Mee.

 

Hot and spicy!

Chillies are really simple plant! Unfortunately pest love them so much! The plant is very easily attacked by mealy bug!

Mealybug females feed on plant sap, normally in roots or other crevices. They attach themselves to the plant and secrete a powdery wax layer (therefore the name mealybug) used for protection while they suck the plant juices. The males on the other hand, are short-lived as they do not feed at all as adults and only live to fertilize the females. Male citrus mealy bugs fly to the females and resemble fluffy gnats.

I have to check the leaves every week to see if any of them have set the colony! Every now and then I have to clean the pest using my hand as I try to minimize the pesticide but they come back sooner or later!

So far the chilli plant is surviving the attacked! Some of the leaves have changed to become yellow due to this pest but the plant look good so far! Every week I have ample of chillies to harvest! 

Red chillies in wet market cost RM20/kg or about USD 6++/kg. It's really expensive and I'm grateful to have the plant in the garden!

  

Chillies

Some vegetables really can strive well without care! Chillies are one of those!

The little seedling that I transferred few months back have been flowering and providing me enough chillies for cooking!

Some I pluck while it's still green and some I let it turn red. The red chillies are more spicy......I read this somewhere last time!

I could only find the rod from my old clothes rack to support the plant! As my morning sickness and evening sickness.....whatever they call it........resides I feel more energetic to do gardening! I hope I will start new planting soon!

I have sow big chilli seeds. Now they are congested inside a small pot and it's time for me to get my hand dirty and transplant them!

With my work and situation now......i just can't get anytime good time to transplant them to the ground! I hope they can adjust for another week! Poor chilli seedling!

Daun kari update and It's festival season here!

My daun kari ( curry leaves) have grown so tall. The leaves are getting smaller and I think it's time to trim them down before they become leggy..... So yesterday I chop them down! I forgot to take the chopped plant photo!

I can see red decoration everywhere now in Malaysia! Tangling "Tanglong" and red "angpow" packet on the lemon tree! It's Chinese New Year season again! I still remember getting "red angpow" packet from my neighbours long time ago! 

I don't have any red in my garden except the chillies!

Chilies

I have problem to upload photos with blogger! This is very annoying! Every time I upload the picture goes missing or most of the time the the "upload" button does not appear! sigh.......

Anyway I will try again to upload later in the evening......

This is chili update. Most of my chili padi / small spicy chillies are doing well. I take some for my cooking and some I dry and put in my cabinet and rice container. Amazingly no ants or other sort of insert enter the containers and cabinet! Wow! It's really useful! I just wonder if it will work with the cockroaches...... I still see one or two of them even though I clean up the cabinet frequently...... arrggg...... any tips?

I must admit that I do not know what to do with abundance of chilies ( cili padi) in the house. Neighbours have many too....can we dry them and make 'cili kering" ? I think many Malaysian aware of "cili kering" right?

Harvest of weekend!

I love weekend! I think every working people love weekend!

I love weekend for few reasons and one of it, is for harvesting time. Weekend is my only time I focus in the garden. I do weeding, tend the plant, even find all the pest and the damage done by them! I harvest most of my vegetables for cooking too!
My last angle loofah. The plant is almost dead. I just sow the new seeds yesterday!

The chillies. We call them 'cili padi' in Malay!

Bitter gourd. I harvested 6 of them altogether! The best harvest so far! 2 already fried on Sunday!

Cili Padi - a suprise !

I have big chili variety in the garden. It grows very well and I have harvested big amount of chillies for a month use.

I never planted cili padi variety as we don't really eat too spicy food. Surprisingly a cili padi plant has grown in my garden on my kangkung bed. I wonder how it came here. Is it from bird droppings? Do bird tolerate that much of spiciness or may be it's from my compose area? Sometimes I do throw my kitchen waste to the compose area. The last time I bought cili padi was about 5 or 6 months back! Did the cili make all the way from my compose area and germinate once the place and weather is appropriate? That's amazing!

Anyway I'm happy with my new gift! ;)

Harvest

I spent most of yesterday evening to pick my harvest. I have pick most of the tomatoes reaching maturity. There were beans, chillies and lady's fingers too!

I just realise that the beans are not in the photo. I have cooked them fresh! I add few lady's fingers in curry too. The balance is what i have taken picture.

Tomatoes this time were small but they taste yummy!

Chillies Update

I have another productive plant after winged beans! A single chilli plant in my garden is producing a lot of chillies. I have too many until I do not know how to use it. I plan to blend them and use for 'sambal' cooking. I do not know if the taste is similar to blended dry chillies paste taste but I will try. At time we put some assumption in our work so I assume chillies are same whether dried or not....hahhaha....

The true survivor!

I have blogged so many times about my chilli plant which have survived for 2 years and give me a lot of chillies! I have stop buying chillies after having this plant. Powdery mildew/ mealy bug constantly attack it and i always think it won't survive another month but surprisingly it have survived almost 12 months!

My other batch of Chillies have all died back and i have to grow a new batch but this plant is the true survivor!
